Lily was all in. I was the skeptical one. We had just recently uprooted our lives, and now we were being proposed to join a group of men who were investing in businesses that we had no idea if they would even hold. We had a nice cash savings, and were just settling into life in Ohio. Johnny flew us to Tampa just so we could take a look.
Tampa was beautiful. It sang to Lily and I unlike any other city we ever went to. It had beaches, great culture, and great weather. For being northern-born Americans, neither of us did well in the winter. I abhorred the snow, even if Iâd made a business of it. I truly would only like it when it only snowed on ski vacations. Tampa was it, and we were sold. Johnny introduced us to Gary and Vince. Gary, Vince, and Johnny were collecting investments to start a venture capitalist deal. They were going to start by opening a franchise of McDonaldâs in Ybor City, near Tampa.
Lily and I stayed up all night at the hotel. We discussed it over and over and over again. The two of us made a pros and cons list, individually, and then we shared it. We prayed together. We looked at our finances and at some point, we conference called our parents to get their advice. They didnât help much; they wanted us to make the decision on our own. We sat on the uncomfortable hotel bed and decided we were moving to Tampa. We were going to jump headfirst into this business, hoping it was viable.
The move to Tampa wasnât hard. We hadnât even unpacked completely from our move from California. We were so excited. We rented a condo with a bay view. It was two bedrooms, tiny - only 850 square feet - but it was perfect for us. It was our first permanent home. Our first home we knew we would stay in. Lily jumped right into the local real estate environment. I donât know how she did it, but she always transitioned so beautifully. Me? I struggled to get my feet underneath me. I thrived on structure and routine. It took some time, but I finally got my bearings and took my leadership role in the business. We were pouring a significant amount of money each into the franchise and we all took a different role to build it. I handled the personnel and leadership development. It was a role made just for me.
Within six months, Lily was hitting the top of the charts in and around St. Petersburg and Tampa, as one of the best new real estate agents in Florida. She thrived in this environment. She was confident and in her zone. Our business opened and was bustling. We had hired a good staff, and provided good training. We quickly gained back what we invested and we were beginning to make money. As a business entity, we had to make decisions. We started to invest in other types of businesses.
