Chapter

Twenty-Three

We were just approaching the Cabal’s HQ in West London when my phone rang.

It was Gloria Russo.

My heart sank. I always hated taking calls from the station’s boss. It was never anything good, like a pay rise, or perhaps a new slot, or even better—Bumgardner deciding that radio work wasn’t him for after all and he had decided to fire himself into the sun.

“Hey, boss,” I said. “Always a pleasant surprise. How are you? Family good?”

“Steve,” she said in simple reply, ignoring my overtly chirpy greeting because, like me, she knew it was total bullshit, “I’ve got an exciting new development for you. I need you back at the station tomorrow at five o’clock. Wear something presentable.”

“What’s happening, an HR meeting? If someone overheard a conversation with Shelley, they’ve got the wrong end of the stick. That’s just our banter.”

“It’s not that, although I do need to have a word with you both regarding your language in the workplace at some point. No, we’re launching a new live YouTube show. Frankie is hosting, and as a way to introduce our shows and presenters to the internet people, you’ll be the first guest.”

Internet people! People like Gloria and technology should never mix.

“This sounds like a terrible idea,” I said. “You know how I feel about Frankie. And how he feels about me. It’ll be a disaster. Have him interview Whiskers instead. The internet people love dog videos. I’ll even get him to do a trick.”

“Steve, this isn’t optional. It’s contracted promotional duties.”

“I’ve never done anything like this in the five and a half years of working there.”

“Right, so you owe me. If you don’t want to do it and be part of this station’s new global direction, then perhaps you and Frankie should no longer job share.”

A silence stretched out between us. I knew exactly what she meant. Frankie was the big cheese in this cheese-and-shit sandwich, and you can guess which ingredient I was, and hint—it’s not the bread. It was either do this stupid interview or lose my job.

Although I was only working it part time now that I was an adventuring type, it did provide me with a good cover, and frankly, I liked it. Telling stories of the weird and occult was my thing, and now that I was privy to even more weirdness, I was in a better position to tell even better stories—appropriately edited so as not to fall foul of the academy’s rules regarding exposing the public to the “truth.”

Gloria had me over a barrel and was caning my bare ass with all the effort of a boys’ school headmaster. With a deep sigh for her benefit, I agreed. “Fine, I’ll do the interview. But if Frankie starts any nonsense, then I’m out.”

“It’ll be a Your Tube hit.”

“YouTube,” I corrected.

“Just be there, Steve.”

The phone line went dead. I slumped back in the passenger seat.

Jazz leaned forward. “Well, that sounds like a flaming umbrella of turds.”

“Couldn’t put it better myself,” I said, hating Bumgardner more with every breath.
