Chapter 17

Chapter Seventeen

The party ended before the ambulance even arrived, but Daniel requested everyone stay where they were. Luci and Kris sat off to one side, perched on the stairs and watching the proceedings. All around everyone was quiet and subdued, most everyone watching the paramedics and officers talking in low voices as they took photos of the body before throwing a sheet over Lorraine, hauling her onto a gurney, and taking it out of the building.

“I want that glass bagged for evidence,” Daniel said, pointing at the plastic glass laying on the ground. “Make sure you get some of the drink itself as well.”

Luci watched all of this with a strange numbness and dissociation. She wondered if there was another note. No, she didn’t wonder if it was there: she wondered what it said.

After what seemed like a century, Daniel began dismissing the guests, all of whom departed as quickly as possible. It was after everyone had left that Daniel approached Luci and Kris. His eyes were glued on Luci, his lips a thin line.

“I need you to come with me, Luci,” he said.

Shock and panic jolted through her like lightning. Those words and the grim expression on the detective’s face told her everything she needed to know.

She nodded and turned to her sister.

“Would you mind closing the library for me?” she asked. “I’m guessing this might take a while.”

“Yeah, of course.” There was no color in Kris’ already pale face now, and her dark eyes darted between Luci and Daniel, as if debating whether to say something. Kris wasn’t an idiot; she knew the implications behind Daniel’s request. “Luce, I—”

Daniel cleared his throat. “Actually,” he said. “I’m going to need both of you.”

Kris’ entire body went stiff.

“Me?” she asked, all but squeaking.

Daniel nodded. “In separate cars, actually.” He didn’t look at Luci.

“But I didn’t–” Kris began.

“Don’t worry,” Luci said, cutting her sister off. She flashed a reassuring smile that she hoped was convincing. “It’s going to be fine.”

But as the two followed Detective Flinn out of the library, going toward different police cars, she wondered if she had just lied to her sister. .

“Was there another note?”

Daniel glanced over at her, giving her a slightly incredulous look.

“You do know why you’re here, don’t you?” he asked.

‘Here’ was a plain room with a single table, three chairs, and nondescript everything else: nondescript white walls; nondescript dingy, pale carpet; nondescript light brown door. It was unmistakably an interrogation room.

Luci shifted in the intentionally uncomfortable chair as she glanced up at the slightly too-bright overhead light. Her stomach was churning as her heart raced and threatened to explode from her chest.

Across the table, nearer the door, a beefy man she had never met was hunched over a notepad. Daniel’s partner? Someone sitting in because two people were required? She had no idea, but she focused on the bald patch on his head as it glinted in the artificial light. She knew from somewhere that the police blocking the door was a
