Chapter 8
Bekki texted Nick as she left the café, but before she could hit send, she found him just outside.
“How did it go?”
“Uh, okay I guess.” She frowned. “I’m not really sure.”
“Let’s find some place to talk.” He steered her back down the hallway as a few police officers walked towards them.
“Where? There are cameras everywhere. I’ve seen them. I feel like there’s nowhere we can go that we’re not being watched. I almost wish I’d never found out about the cameras in the first place.” She wrapped her arms around herself.
“It’s all right, it’s not like we have anything to hide, let’s just see if we can find somewhere private. Let’s try in here.” Nick pushed open a nearby door marked ‘POOL’. The scent of chlorine immediately greeted them both. “See?” He smiled. “No one else is here. There is a camera, but no one can hear us.”
She stepped inside after him, but her attention remained on the hallway beyond the door.
“Don’t you think it’s strange that people are acting like this is some kind of true crime television show, instead of a tragedy that happened right under their noses?” She shivered despite the warmth in the room. “No one seems to actually be upset, just intrigued.”
“You did say that Grace mentioned it was difficult to get close to Narelle. Maybe that’s why no one is very upset. None of them were friends with Narelle.”
“But she must have had friends. I mean, she might not have been friends with people here, but she must have had friends somewhere. It’s impossible for someone like that to be completely isolated.”
“Someone like what?” He eyed her curiously.
“Beautiful, quite famous.” She shrugged. “You know the type.”
“From what I can tell her beauty and popularity are exactly what isolated her, and might have even been what got her killed.” He turned to look at the pool.
“That’s true. I guess maybe I just wish it was different for her.” She slipped her hand into his and followed his gaze to the water. Just then, the water splashed, and someone surfaced from it. The sight surprised her so much, that she jumped backward into Nick’s arms.
“Sorry to startle you.” The woman in the water raised her swimming goggles. “Honestly, you scared me as well. I thought I was alone in here.”
“You must have been under the water when we stepped in.” Nick kept his arm around Bekki. “We didn’t mean to disturb you.”
“It’s all right. I just needed a break from the run around.”
“Janice?” Bekki stepped forward to take a closer look. “Is that you?”
“Yes, it is.” Janice pulled herself up out of the pool.
“Do you swim often?”
“Oh, it’s my favorite exercise. At home, I have a pool, and I swim each morning, or more if I have something I’m trying to work out in my mind. It’s great for stress relief.”
“Sorry to interrupt you.” Nick cleared his throat. “We were just looking for a quiet place.”
“Well you’ve found it, if I’m not in it anyway.” She laughed.
