Chapter 25

“Ann Bryant, you will travel to Port Jackson aboard the ‘Diana’. We are outfitting the ship and waiting for the rest of the prisoners to arrive, expecting to depart in early December. We will have around one hundred convicts on board as well as some free settlers and children, but you will not be permitted to speak with them.” The superintendent is a solid, middle-aged man with a square jaw and thick head of dark hair, the shadow of a beard on his chin. His eyes are blue and piercing, gazing at her to make sure she’s listening to his words. “Everyone who comes on-board will have a thorough medical examination. The reason for this is to prevent contagious illnesses such as gaol fever and cholera spreading.” Ann nods her head in understanding, her insides tight as she remembers how sick she was with cholera.

“In addition to your own clothing, each convict will be issued with two sets of clothing and footwear for the thirteen thousand-mile journey. We will advise prisoners of the rules and regulations on-board tomorrow morning, and the rest of the convicts will board the vessel in the next few weeks. I must impress upon you that your future prosperity in Australia will depend on how you conduct yourself on-board the ship. You are expected to abandon your evil ways and become a useful member of society. I will be making a full report to hand to the Governor of New South Wales upon our arrival, so I expect exemplary behaviour.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Any illicit behaviour with crew members is absolutely forbidden and will be punished immediately. Do I make myself absolutely clear on that point?”

“You don’t need to worry about that with me, Sir.” Ann smiles to herself wondering what the superintendent would think if he knew the truth about her and Issy.
