Chapter Twelve

Riding shotgun while Colonel Almenara sat in the back was unnerving. Nathan preferred to be out of sight if possible. The colonel’s eyes boring into the back of his neck was not out of sight. Even if the colonel’s eyes were doing no such thing.

Cam, with the exception of a few smartass comments about being pressganged into being the colonel’s chauffer, hadn’t said much since their conversation the night before. He didn’t seem angry, but he clearly had a lot on his mind. They were all on edge, so Nathan didn’t read too much into it, but he didn’t like the distance between them. He snuck a glance and got busted the moment he turned his head.

“You okay?” Cam asked.

“Yeah. Just nervous.”

“Try to relax, Nathan,” the colonel said. “I won’t let him take over again.”

“I know.” Unfortunately that was only one of many things Nathan was worried about.

He’d slept little and badly, too afraid of dreams-not-dreams and the fallout of emotion and fear they left in their wake. Too afraid of the all-over grinding pain they brought with them. Too afraid of seeing again what his not-self held in his hands, what was quite literally keeping him sane sunk knee-deep in an insane situation, and what Nathan was somehow on the verge of losing when he’d never even had it in the first place. So how did the thought of it slipping away hurt so much?

A fool’s dream, nothing more, to think he could have what that other self had, though that didn’t mean Nathan could stop fantasizing about it. Most of his life had been unconsciously consumed with convincing himself he didn’t want it, or better, that it never even occurred to him to want it, and still, it was there. Always. Way down deep in a place he never intentionally or even knowingly went but still managed to visit far too often. As useless now as it had been all along, now that he’d metaphorically had his nose shoved into the reality of it in a world he’d never have. Even if Cam and Nathan both felt the same as those other selves, their lives were emphatically different. Irrevocably so.

So why couldn’t he make the idea go away?

“I think that’s her,” Cam said.

They turned a corner and Nathan saw a car sitting by itself in the outside parking lot. He recognized it as the one Summers had driven to their last meeting. It looked fitting for an executive vice president—new, nice, and expensive.

Since they’d left the van behind, Cam had deliberately taken “the kids’ car,” as he and Bebe called the older model sedan their father kept for when they came home, though in truth it was mostly Bebe’s. Cam hardly ever drove anything he couldn’t fit Nathan comfortably into. But showing up in the colonel’s top of the line Mercedes would scream he was with them and Summers might bolt.

A woman stepped out of the car and Cam nodded. “It’s her. C’mon, Puff. Let’s go.”

Nathan swung his legs out of the car and set the feet of his crutches on the ground.
