CHAPTER SIX

“Morning. Did you sleep well?” Wallie came out of the bathroom, rubbing his eyes and stretching.

“No, I barely slept at all.” I let out a deep yawn that originated from the depths of my exhausted body. My eyelids were heavy, and the weight of fatigue settled in. My body cried out for more sleep, and I knew I couldn’t resist its call. I tried to prop myself up with pillows, but my back protested. It was sore and achy from all our adventures of the last several days.

Today was supposed to be my day of rest, a chance to recover from the physical and emotional strain of last night. I didn’t know what anyone else had planned, but the bed and I had plans to stay together.

“I’m going to go get some coffee. Are you hungry?” Wallie stood at the door with his hand on the doorknob.

“Yes, bring me whatever there is for breakfast, please.” He opened the bedroom door, and Lucy-Fur, Ava’s beautiful white cat, slinked around him, twisting her tail around his leg as she passed.

“What are you doing here?” I screeched way louder than necessary. Seriously though, she was supposed to be back in Maine. How’d she even get here?

“The man named after me brought me.” She hopped on the bed and sat on my feet. I eyed her and looked around the room.

“Luci?” Why would Lucifer bring her here?

She sniffed. “That’s my name, isn’t it?”

What a cranky-butt. “Okay, so why are you here then?”

She used my legs as a balance beam and tiptoed to my knee, where she curled up like a loaf of bread. It felt very awkward, so I shook my leg to get her off. She climbed back on, then continued walking up my leg, taking delicate steps. I was about to swat her off when she stepped next to my stomach.

“I’ve always wanted to visit Australia,” she said.

Fair enough. I turned on my side, and Lucy cuddled next to me. The baby kicked, and I grunted. There was nothing like getting the wind knocked out of you from the inside.

“Can we turn the other way? Wallie’s side of the bed smells like a wet dog,” Lucy complained.

I snorted and slowly rolled my body over to the other side. Lucy walked along the outline of my very round stomach, leaning in and even getting kicked by the baby. Finally, she curled around my stomach, and we both fell asleep.

“What did you do, bribe her?” Zoey asked, waking us both with a start. “She never cuddles with anyone. Ever.”

Lucy snuggled closer to my belly and hissed at Zoey. “I cuddle, but only with people I like. You’re lucky I let you sleep in my bed.” She closed her eyes and turned her head away from Zoey.

Zoey huffed and put her hands on her hips with her nostrils flaring. One of her ears popped up. “It’s my bed, you crazy cat!”

She charged toward the bed and Lucy, but before Zoey could get her hands on the cat, Lucy leaped off the bed and scurried under it.
