Stacy had chosen to take the subway to work that morning, not wanting to fight traffic for half her day. She took the subway back and had to walk a few blocks to her apartment when she got off. The city was as busy as ever, but she couldn’t help feeling that among the many cars, one was trailing her.

Let’s test him, Stacy thought, turning down a street in the opposite direction of her destination. The nondescript gray sedan she had noticed since exiting the subway station turned as well. She made a second turn. The sedan followed. Stacy returned to the street that led to her apartment. With how many encounters she’d had, she guessed they knew where she lived. Maybe I should find somewhere else to stay for a while, she thought.

Where that would be, she did not know. She didn’t want to worry Jenna or put her in danger, and her family estate was too far from work. She turned again and ducked into an alley. Hidden in the shadows, she watched the car pass by.

“Gotcha,” she whispered as she memorized the license plate. “Should have tried harder, fellas.” A slight smile played on her lips. She didn’t see how she could go to the police. They wouldn’t do a damn thing about it. Still, having the information would help in some way, she was sure. At the least, she could keep track of the car.

She set off toward her apartment. She remembered the food and beer she had promised, and she crossed the street to enter a Chinese takeout restaurant.
