CHAPTER 8

If I was given the chance to describe the Underworld, in one word it would be ‘Scary’. That word had been used so many times to describe things humans couldn’t explain. But for me, the Underworld looked like, smelt like, and felt like… Death. After jumping through the portal, Sinn and I landed in a deserted land that reminded me of the desert… after an apocalypse.

Civilization… seriously, it’s the Underworld Breena, I thought, looking around.

“This is unpleasant,” I said as I tried to understand my surroundings. Were there maps in the Underworld? Because I would pay big bucks for a GPS right about now. “Where are we?”

“The Underworld, Breena,” Sinn said.

“Thank you, captain obvious. Where are we going?” I asked, trying to calm my nerves. The Underworld had seemed like such a great idea seconds ago. Now, not so much. “Tell me you know where we are.”

Sinn turned around, then pointed at something in the distance. “There.”

“What’s there?” I asked as I stared ahead at the distorted image. It was a mountain covered by dark clouds, and the gloomy feeling in my soul deepened.

“You will see,” he said and started walking toward the mountain as I trudged through the sand behind him.

We walked for two hours before my legs refused to continue. I fell to my knees, then sighed in relief when Sinn positioned me on his back. Apparently, incubus demons didn’t get tired. We slogged through the sand for three more hours before the sand gave way to strange foliage.

The green bushes were darker than anything I had seen in the human realm and the stones were almost white. He put me down when the terrain became more treacherous. “Do you know where we are?” I asked.

“I grew up close to here,” he said and continued along the barely there path.

I jogged to catch up as he sprinted up a short hill. It was obvious he was familiar with the area, and I wanted to ask him about it, but had trouble staying close. With the fog rolling in, I had no inclination to let him out of my sight.

He stopped at the top, and my eyes widened when the clouds parted to reveal a massive castle. The Scottish-looking castle was not well kept. The ramparts were cracked with several stones missing and it was impossible to tell what was once on the ripped flag, but it showed signs of creatures living in it…. Dragons.

“Whoa,” I said as a black dragon swooped in the air above the tallest tower. “That’s one enormous castle.”

“Yeah,” he chuckled in response.

“Who lives here?” I asked him curiously, while the dragon continued his acrobatic display.

He took a while to respond, as if he was gathering up the courage to give an answer. I let him take his time, feeling like I asked enough of him. I was about to tell him it didn’t matter when he blurted, “My father.”

“Y-your f-father?” I stammered; I don’t know why, but ice slithered up my spine when he mentioned his father.
