“That was quite a birthday party,” Michael said as they drove home that evening. He asked, Gladys, “Have you ever attended a birthday party like that?”

She chuckled. “No. That was a first. It was interesting.” Gladys added, “I felt like I was watching one of my favorite police programs on stage instead of on the TV.”

“I can’t believe Craig had such a deep secret that he’d never shared it with any of us,” Savannah said.

“It’s a good thing he told Iris about it,” Michael said, “otherwise, they’d still be stuck in dead-end mode.”

Savannah thought for a moment. “I hope what they discovered tonight leads them to the truth. It’s actually kind of an off-the-wall approach to something rather scientific.”

“So you’re going to involve your friend, Chris, are you?” Michael asked.

Savannah nodded. “Yes, if Craig wants me to and if she’s available and willing. I’d sure like to help Craig resolve this very personal case.” More quietly she said, “Let’s hope his nephew is innocent.” She took a deep breath. “Meanwhile, right now my thoughts and my heart are with Rochelle and Peter and especially Simon.”

“I’ve had them on my mind, too,” Michael said. “They have another adoption hearing this week, right?”

Savannah nodded. “I hope things roll in their direction, for Simon’s benefit.”

“I’m sure that good will prevail,” Gladys said quietly.

“Is that your prediction, Mom?” Savannah asked. “You sound so certain.”

Michael chuckled. “Yeah, like you got a divine message or something.”

“Maybe I did,” Gladys said, grinning. “I feel it in my bones; does that count as a divine message?”

“You feel it in your bones?” Savannah repeated. “That’s kind of eerie.”

“Haven’t you heard that before?” Gladys asked. “It’s an old-timey saying.”

Savannah patted her mother’s knee. “Well, I hope your bones are correct. Peter, Rochelle, and Simon are going to court Monday. Let’s all keep positive thoughts for the right outcome for Simon.”
