Chapter 19

Kiernan

I wasn’t sure if I loved or hated the sex shrine.

For one thing, I’d just had the longest and most intense orgasm I’d ever had in my life, and I’d given Fionn one with five fucking pulses. But for the other thing, my sweet gentle lover was now sobbing in my arms like his heart was broken.

I didn’t try to get him to stop, or to talk to me; I just held him, stroked his back, and murmured nice things about how lovely he was. When I could breathe properly, I eased over the side of the pool and into the water, letting the heat soothe and relax him.

When he finally went limp against me, I leaned back and stroked away the hair that was sticking to his face. He looked at me, stared, and suddenly laughed.

“You’ve got semen all over your face,” he said. “And in your hair.”

“And whose fault is that?” I kissed his nose and unwound one arm from him so I could rinse my face. When I surfaced, he was still smiling. I was relieved that my after-sex state could give him some amusement.

“I’m sorry.” He wet his hand and worked at a bit of spunk still stuck in my hair.

“For making me come so hard I almost dislocated my hips?”

His lips curled up a little more. “For… for crying.” His cheeks turned pink. “Right after you…” He licked his lips and looked away.

“I counted five,” I said, wrapping my arms securely around him again.

“Goddess Above, Kier. That was…” He shook his head and looked at me, his pink tongue caught between his teeth.

“Toe-curling?” I said. “Amazing? Mind-blowing?”

“Oh, yes. All of those things.” He tucked his head against my shoulder.

“But you had a vision.” He turned his head so his face was buried in my neck. “It wasn’t a vision. Or it was, but…” He made a frustrated noise. “It was like I was filled with knowledge, like the spirits here flooded me with magic and… It was like my fifth pulse tore me open and they… I was so full of knowing it was too much to bear.”

“Is that why you cried?” I pressed my face into his hair.

“No,” he said, his voice gone soft. “No, I cried because it was wonderful and then… it all started to drain away, and I couldn’t hold onto it.”

“Is it all gone? Everything the spirits filled you with?”

“No, not all of it. But there was so much. I knew who I’m meant to be, and I knew why the Vogel have so few seers, and I knew how to do so much magic. And… even what’s still in me feels distant, like I know it’s there but I can’t reach it.”

I kissed the top of his head. “I know what this place is,” I said.

“A shrine.” He laughed into my shoulder and some of the sadness seeped away. “A mind-blowing sex shrine.”

I laughed, too. “It is that. But remember I said this place reminded me of the cave in Morven?”

He nodded.
