Chapter 9
An Unhelpful Detective
Detective Meyers was decidedly unhelpful. In fact, he hung up on me. Fletcher was no better. He refused to take my call. So, I did the only other thing I could think of. I called Bat.
“Detective Battersea.”
“Hey Bat.”
He let out a growling sound. “What do you want, Viola?”
I told him about Belle’s death. “All I want to know is, did she kill herself? Or did someone else do it?”
“And why do you want this information?”
“Just to settle my mind,” I said innocently.
He snorted. “You’re investigating again, aren’t you?”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“At least you’re Meyers’s problem. Give me a few. I’ll get back to you.” He hung up without saying goodbye.
A few minutes later the phone rang. “Hello, Bat.”
“Viola. I talked to Meyers. She was smothered, but there was no struggle.”
“What?” My mind whirled. “That can’t be suicide. Struggle or no struggle.”
“No it can’t. Meyers thinks she was drugged and then probably a pillow put over her face. He’s waiting on the results of the blood test.”
“Are they going to arrest Kevin?”
“Who?”
“Her husband,” I said.
“What makes you think her husband did it?”
“Isn’t it always the husband?” I asked.
“Often, but not always.”
“Well, I’m thinking it definitely was this time.”
“Why?” he asked. “Why not the letter writer?”
“Because. The letter writer has handed out a lot of nasty notes, but not done anything actually violent. Plus, there was just something about the way Kevin looked at Belle that first night...”
“They’re newlyweds, Viola. Why would he kill her?”
“I don’t know, maybe he wanted her money?”
“She didn’t have any.”
“Well, there has to be a motive somewhere and I’m going to find out. Thanks, Bat.”
He grunted and hung up. Again without a goodbye.
Me, I had other things to think about. Now I had two criminals to unmask. The letter writer and the killer. But I was sure Kevin killed Belle. I paused. Could he be the letter writer, too? His handwriting hadn’t matched, but he could have disguised it. Used the letters to make everyone think Belle had killed herself. That had to be it. But first, I needed to know why.
