Chapter 11
To be perfectly honest, Callie would have been just as happy to stay up in the mountainside clearing for the rest of the day, kissing Declan and feeling the warmth of his body even through the heavy winter jackets they were wearing. She hadnât ever felt like this while being kissed before â like a little thrill of sparking electricity was running through her chest, filling her with warmth.
Sheâd always thought the feeling of butterflies in your stomach whenever someone touched you was just some cliché made up by the greeting card industry to make people spend money they didnât really have, but nowâ¦
Now, Iâm starting to wonder if itâs all real after all, she thought, as she clung to Declanâs unicornâs neck as they plunged back down the mountain together.
As much as both of them had wanted to, they couldnât stay up on the mountain all day â for one thing, despite how warm Declan was, Callie could feel the temperature dropping. For another, Declan had told her that there were more things he needed to explain about unicorns, and it would probably be best to do it over a cup of hot chocolate, somewhere warm.
Callie couldnât disagree with that â especially the part about hot chocolate.
Sheâd thought that Declan might shift back into his human form once they reached the edge of town, but he didnât â but then, she realized, in a town full of unicorns, why would he need to? Everyone could do the same thing, so it wouldnât have caused anyone any concern to see a unicorn galloping by.
He carried her through the streets and to his home before kneeling down in the snow and allowing her to slide off his back, before shifting.
âI donât think Iâm ever going to get sick of that,â Callie laughed, watching him in awe. How does he even do that?
âWell, letâs hope not,â Declan said with a grin. âIâd hate for my novelty to wear off.â
âI donât think thereâs any chance of that,â Callie told him as he took her hand, leading her to the large cottage his parents lived in. âI think thatâll be pretty amazing to me for a little while yet.â
The house seemed empty when they went inside, and no one answered when Declan called out.
âJo is probably picking up Nora and Jessa from school,â Declan said. âAnd Mom⦠well, thatâs part of what I have to tell you about. Come into the kitchen and Iâll fix us some hot chocolate and explain.â
Callie followed him, sitting down at the kitchen table, and Declan opened the fridge and got out some milk, pouring it into a little saucepan and placing it on the stove.
âItâs probably best if I just get right to the point,â Declan said, stirring the warming milk. âWe unicorns donât celebrate Christmas, but this is still a special time of year for us. Or this year is, anyway. Itâs the time of year when we pick the next leader of the unicorn clans.â He cleared his throat a little uncomfortably.
