Romeo, Grateful Dead Cemetery, Afterworlds

Romeo did not go back to the Poe Agency office right away. He went to the Grateful Dead Graveyard instead because he had a question to ask Carlos. Many questions were swirling around in his brain like tornados touching down here and there to suck up once stable structures and turn them to rubble. He had called a wind from hell (according to the priest ) to break the vampire’s hold. That alone would be enough to cause the tornados but he also seemed to have a new sister who was a witch. Not to mention the fact that his monster father seemed to be trying to kill him. Couldn’t get worse parenting than that. And he’d had 37 other brothers and sisters he’d never known about.

He didn’t find Carlos at his cottage so he wandered up to the mortuary and chapel. Carlos wasn’t there either. The only place left that he might be on the property was the graveyard, probably at its center where he practiced magic sometimes. It was the oldest part of the graveyard and it had been made by Mr. Baudelaire to be its magical center. The circle of smooth stones were themselves magic. Mr. Baudelaire claimed they came from of the cave where Merlin himself had been imprisoned by the enchantress Nimue. Tattooed on the stones were magical symbols that held great secrets, some of which Mr. Baudelaire had learned and some not.

Romeo found Carlos there. He was speaking a spell so he didn’t interrupt until he was done.

“You look like crap,” Carlos said.

“People, well, a vampire in this case, have been trying to kill me again.”

“I’ve had a day too. One of the ghosts of those murdered last night escaped.”

“I thought your father and you and your sister put some serious charms around this cemetery.”

“He had special powers,” Carlos said.

“What kind of special powers?”

“The necromancy kind, I think. I don’t think he knew he had them though.”

Romeo told Carlos about the orphanage and what he’d learned there about his brothers and sisters..

“Gods,” Carlos said. “I’m sorry about your brothers and sisters. That’s terrible.”

Then he told him about his monster father and the likelihood that he had killed his brothers and sisters and was trying to kill him.

“Horrible.”

Then he told him about the priest and the wind from Hell he seemed to call.

“I might be able to help you with that one. You’re a necromancer. Must be a pretty versatile one to call a wind from hell. I thought you Necros could just call dead people. We should ask my father.”

“I’m not a necromancer.”

“I think you are.”

“I’ve never called the dead,” Romeo said. “Not even on the phone.”

“You don’t know how to use the magic but it’s there. You brought a wind from Hell when you needed it. Most likely you got help from someone who is dead. That’s the way necromancers work.”

“Like an Undertaker?”

“Undertakers get their magic from the power of the dead but they don’t use the dead. Necromancers go straight to the source.
