Chapter Forty-Seven

Rune refused to admit he wasn’t sleeping, and Faye wasn’t sure how to broach the subject. She’d hoped after a few days his exhaustion would force him to rest. The deeper rasp of his morning voice gave way to a tired, hollow sound, further confirming her suspicions. The man would say he slept, but the shadows darkening his eyes had nothing to do with Voshki being close to the surface.

It had been four days, and they couldn’t go on pretending nothing was wrong. Faye sat up in their bed. “You’re not sleeping, are you?”

Rune rubbed his eyes and said, “I am rested.”

“No, you’re not,” Faye pressed. “You can’t do this forever. You need sleep.”

He sat up, and the dark silk sheets lowered, exposing the waistband of the pajama bottoms he’d begun wearing to bed. “I… I fear hurting you.”

“You didn’t hurt me,” Faye said softly as she leaned closer.

“I could have,” Rune answered. He crossed his legs and studied the sheets folded between them. “When I last woke, I did not recognize you were in bed with me until it was too late.”

Faye took his hand and said, “They’re nightmares, and I shielded myself.” His silence answered her and she quietly added, “Tell me how I can help you.”

“Vsenia,” Rune began.

Faye crawled up the bed to sit at the headboard. She gave Rune an expectant glance and patted her thigh.

“I am sorry I have not been tending to you,” Rune said in a soft tone.

“What?” Faye curled her lip as her brows drew together. “I’m not—Darkness, I can’t tell if you’re joking or not,” Faye said, pulling her pillow over her lap. “Lay down.”

Rune rolled onto his side and propped his head up on his hand. His pale blue gaze lowered to her lap before lifting to her face. “You want me to lay my head on your lap?”

“It’s like you’ve never been comforted in your life,” Faye grumbled, scooting closer to him. His expression fell, and Faye instantly regretted the words. She reached for him and said, “You belong to me, let me take care of you.”

“Yes, my queen.” He did as she asked and slid his fingers under her calf.

“I can watch over you and shield myself,” Faye said gently, smoothing a lock of his hair behind his ear. She ran two fingers along his brow bone, following it to his temple. This always calmed Sparrow after a bad breakup. On her third stroke, Rune closed his eyes.

He looked exhausted, the fatigue shadowing his features, much darker than when he simply pushed too far looking into The Crumbling.

“You’re home now,” Faye said softly. “I won’t let anything like that happen again.” She knew the court was long destroyed and a disappointed fury flickered through her. Her power rose with the emotion as pinpricks spread over her nails and along her back where her wings emerged.

The urge to warm her claws in the flesh of each woman she’d seen in Rune’s memories lashed through her mind. Their screams would be a fine symphony to her retribution.
