LUKE AND JARED were met by Sheriff Harper, whoâd just stepped from his office and into the lobby.
âThat was quick,â Harper said.
âWhat do you mean?â Luke asked.
âI assume youâre here to ask about the shooting out at Christieâs,â the lawman replied.
Stunned, Luke turned to his partner.
âWhat shooting? We hadnât heard anything,â Luke said.
âI guess youâll find out soon enough,â Harper replied. âThe 9-1-1 call came in around eight this morning from Jean Christie. She said that Ed had been shot dead in his barn. Iâm waiting for verification from Michaels.â
âYou have to be kidding!â Luke said. âWhatâs going on in this town, anyway?â
âWouldnât we all like to know,â Harper replied.
âSheriff, itâs Michaels,â Jane Lyons called from across the lobby, holding up her phone.
âIâll take it in my office,â he replied. âExcuse me, gentlemen.â
Luke and Jared stood silently, too nervous to take seats. The possibility of the two murders being connected was obvious, but there was no need to speculate. Not yet, anyway.
Minutes later, Harper emerged from the office, his face drawn and thoughtful.
âItâs true. Ed Christieâs been murdered.â
âHow was he killed?â Luke asked.
âSingle gunshot, and I really should stop there. I canât say much more. This is an open murder investigation now.â
âEd Christie was our client in the DOT challenge, Sheriff,â Luke protested. âAnd his murder may have relevance to Aaronâs case. Surely, you can disclose details to us.â
âIn time. Not now,â Harper replied.
âHeâs right,â Jared said, turning to Luke.
âWe were here to meet with Aaron. Is it okay if we go on back?â Luke asked.
Harper signaled to the guard seated outside the jailhouse door. âLet them back.â
The rotund guard tossed his magazine on the desk and led the attorneys through the door to their clientâs cell.
It was mid-morning and Aaron was still prone on his cot. He stirred as the iron cell door slid to the side.
âDoes he need to be here?â Aaron asked, staring at Jared as he dropped his feet to the floor. âI donât need one attorney, let alone two.â
Luke waited for the jailer to disappear behind the door at the end of the aisle.
âA team of lawyers might not be enough to save your lazy, lying ass,â Luke said, standing over the groggy-eyed prisoner.
âWhy is it all I get from you is insults and pessimism?â Aaron asked.
âAnd why is it all I get from you is lies?â
âAll Iâve told you is the truth and the whole truth, so help me God,â he said with a cocky grin.
âWhere were you at the time of your dadâs murder?â Luke asked, his steely blue eyes laser focused on Aaron.
âIâve already told you. Driving home after getting gas.â
âI want to know where you were from the time you left the Citgo station until you arrived at your parentsâ home,â Luke said, stepping closer. âAnd answer carefully. We have proof it took you nearly an hour to travel those three miles.â
Aaron turned to Jared. âWhatâs he talking about?â Aaron asked, puckering his face.
âThereâs a surveillance video of your car taken near the gas station.
