Chapter 34

The Diner was packed, so Holly and I grabbed stools at the counter, and ordered strawberry waffles that, it turned out, came with a side of gossip. Diner Daisy shuffled over, a glint in her eye. She leaned in, her voice a loud whisper.

“You girls won’t believe what these old ears picked up yesterday,” she began, tapping the side of her head. “You know how everyone thinks I’m deaf as a post? Well, that just means they don’t bother to keep their voices down around me!”

Holly and I exchanged a worried look, wondering exactly what we might have said in Daisy’s presence. “What did you hear, Daisy?” My curiosity was definitely piqued.

Daisy grinned, relishing the attention. “That old codger Tom Bennett was in here yesterday, sittin’ in a booth with two fancy-lookin’ fellas in suits. City slickers, if you ask me. Anyway, they were talkin’ about some sort of underhanded deal.”

She paused for dramatic effect, making sure she had our full attention. She most definitely did. “Seems like Tom’s plan is to buy up the Reed farm, and then sell it off with his other properties to one of those big corporate thingamabobs in a year’s time. Figures the town won’t put up a fuss if he’s the one doin’ the buyin’ and by the time he sells it to them, it’ll be too late!”

Holly gasped. “That sneaky old son of a—biscuit eater! He knows darn well we don’t want corporate farms here!”

Daisy nodded sagely. “Oh, it gets better. Apparently, once he sells his dirty rotten soul, he’s hightailin’ it down to Mexico with that child bride of his. Seems she’s been pesterin’ him to get outta Iowa, and he figures this is their ticket to easy street.”

“I can’t believe he’d do that. What a—biscuit eater.” But it was even more interesting that his ‘child bride’ was the one trying to get him to move after what she’d said last night. And now I really wanted to know who called her! After pondering it overnight and this morning, I was sure it wasn’t Tom. farmers get up early and go to bed early, and that call had come close after eleven.

Daisy cackled, clearly enjoying being the bearer of such juicy gossip. “Well, that’s what happens when you marry a man old enough to be your great grandfather. Starts puttin’ all sorts of stupid ideas in your head. I bet the little blue pills are cheaper down south!”

She straightened up, a twinkle in her eye. “But you didn’t hear none of this from me, right? Folks might start realizin’ I’m not as deaf as they think, and then where would I get all my int’resting news?”

“Don’t worry, Daisy,” I promised. My brain was going a mile a minute. “Your secret’s safe with us.”
