Chapter 15

O’Neill sat at the Great Dane’s first floor bar and estimated the height of every attractive woman he saw. The tallest of the first twenty-two women was six foot one, and the shortest was five foot one. He didn’t care. The rush of excitement was undeniable, and he thought about Hancock Street and wondered where exactly Erin Meyer lived. He ordered a second Scotch ale and decided he needed to focus on something besides her, so he convinced a bartender, a blonde man who looked too old to be a student, to let him use their phone, saving thirty-five cents. He tried Ryder’s cell first, and he answered after one ring.

“I was hoping you would call,” Ryder said. “I’m going to the Big 10 Pub to meet with Mary and Tom Hoffman.”

“Really? Mary canceled on me a few hours ago because her daughter had a test or something like that. And it’s past ten.”

“She called in a panic. She said she was only getting your voicemail, but she had to meet tonight. She wouldn’t tell me what’s going on, but she said she’s bringing her brother along. I’m relieved you called. You can join us.”

“Let me guess,” O’Neill said. “The police contacted Tom after they got information about this Shakespeare’s Company and he’s got to go to the station tomorrow morning. He ran to his sister, and now they’re worried that the police think he kidnapped Bertram.”

“That’s a reasonable guess. It’s probably an opportunity since we’re both working too many hours on Bertram’s disappearance. The nice thing about this is you can code some of today’s time against her bill rather than against Kathy Siler’s. That allows us to avoid that daily maximum charge.”

“How do I code hours? You’ve never had me do anything but give you hours per day.”

“Okay, I do the coding. I was just thinking out loud.”

“Well, quit it. Why are we going to the Big 10 Pub rather than the office?”

Ryder laughed. “I told her we were closed. I hoped we could meet tomorrow instead. She then suggested meeting at her place. I didn’t want to drive to Fitchburg, so I suggested the Big 10 Pub, figuring it would be easiest for me. We agreed on ten thirty, so get your ass there.”

“I’ll slam this beer and be out the door.” O’Neill put the receiver down and picked up his beer.
