22.
Damp wood and seaweed filled the air that drifted through the harbor on strong fall winds. People chatted in hushed tones while trying their hardest to make it look like they were there to inspect the freshly caught fish or to simply stroll along the water. Slinking through the throng, I let out a chuckle. Amateurs.
We needed to plant some surprises before the ritual started so the task had naturally fallen on the two sneakiest members of our group. The thief and the assassin. Shadeâs dark eyes met mine from across the adjacent pier. I gave him a nod. After returning it, he slipped behind a stack of crates while I bent down in a show of inspecting the merchandise laid out on the closest cart.
âTheyâre freshly caught this morning,â the vendor said.
âMm-hmm.â I studied the array of slimy creatures before me while dropping a tiny pouch under the table. âYeah, nah, Iâm alright.â
âSuit yourself.â
Shrugging, I set course for a cluster of barrels further down. While I continue strolling along the pier and placing pouches in strategic locations, the crowd around me thickened. I didnât worry much about it, though. With their eyesight, the elves would be able to keep track of me and the surprise packages I delivered anyway. However, it also meant that the ritual would be starting soon. I threw a quick glance over my shoulder as I neared the pavilion at the far end of the wide walkway.
âHey! Whatâre you doing here?â
The sudden sound made me jerk my head back towards the pavilion in front of me. A guard scowled at me. Shit. While drifting towards the side of the structure, I cast my gaze around for something to use as an excuse. Boats bobbed in the water inside.
âI was told there was a boat for sale.â I gave him a light shrug as I reached the wooden wall. âAnd that I could inspect it before I bought it.â
Suspicion swirled in his brown eyes as the guard studied me. âThere are no boats for sale here.â
âHuh. Mustâve been someone trying to scam me.â
âYeah, mustâve.â
Just as I was about to turn and begin my retreat, the guard took a few quick steps across the planks. That blooming suspicion had grown stronger when he scrutinized my appearance. I had left most of my visible knives behind in order to not draw as much attention, but I still didnât exactly look like someone who bought boats.
âWhatâve you got in there?â he demanded and nodded at the large black sack full of smaller pouches that I was holding.
Panic shot through me. If he saw what was inside it, our whole plan would be ruined. Still keeping a calm outward appearance, I draped my shoulder against the wall in a casual gesture while expertly tipping the contents of my bag onto the pier. The pouches landed in a small pile in the narrow space between the wall and the water, just outside the pavilion.
âIn this?â I asked, shifting the now empty bag to my other hand.
