Chapter 6

The following two days were some of the worst I had in a while, mainly because I found myself listless, without the strength to do anything. Not even stealing from another gang did anything to make me feel better, and I knew why.

Ava.

Adamant.

The blonde seemed to have taken hold of my mind and didn’t let it go.

Thinking about her always made me hesitate, made my heart flutter, and made all my doubts and hesitations come to the front. I both hated it and felt myself yearning for more.

It reached a point where I knew I had to do something about it. I needed to talk to Ava at least once more. Then I remembered I had her number and the reason for it and bit my lower lip again, a sudden idea taking hold of my thoughts.

It was foolish.

It was daring.

And yet…

The more I thought about it, the more it seemed fitting. When I found myself holding my phone in hand, my finger hovering over Ava’s contact, I barely hesitated before hitting it. Then I panicked, but it rang once, and it would have been too late to take it back. Even then, I almost did. Ava didn’t have my number to know who was on the phone. And then, before it rang a third time, she answered from the other side. “Yes?”

I froze.

“Hi!” The word came out of my mouth unbidden, and I almost cursed.

Silence answered me from the other side, and for a moment, I feared she would just disconnect. “Hey.” She said instead, her greeting a bit hesitant, almost as if she wasn’t sure why I was calling.

Frankly, I still wasn’t sure of that myself. I had a crazy idea, called before really thinking it through, and now I was flying by the seat of my pants.

I breathed in and out, let the silence continue for a few moments, then decided to take a leap. “I think I still owe you a date…”

“You could say that.” Her tone was a bit softer than before, a bit amused as well, and I felt a weight disappear from my back. It seemed she wasn’t pissed at me. Quite the opposite.

I couldn’t help the smile that pulled at my lips. “Well, I think it’s time for me to pay up, right?” I asked, then continued before my courage fled me and she could answer me. “Do you want a fancy place or somewhere more casual?”

“Casual, please.” She answered promptly. “I’ve had far too many meetings at fancy restaurants, much prefer something different for this.”

“Ok, I have a place in mind. Let me set everything up, and I’ll call you back, we’ll pick the day and the time?”

“Sure, but be sure not to take as long this time.” She said, almost teasing.

“I won’t.”

We said our goodbyes and disconnected, and I spent the following minute looking at my phone, not entirely believing what I had just done. That everything had gone so well. I almost called Lily to tell her the news, then contained myself.
