CHAPÂTER 24
I scrubbed at my face with a cloth, exÂamÂined the reÂsult in the bathÂroom mirÂror, and groaned. The rouge had been easy to reÂmove, but the thick dark eyeÂbrows were a difÂferÂent matÂter. They had faded to a light-brown shadow of themÂselves, but were still most defÂiÂnitely present. I apÂplied more cold cream and sat on the edge of the bath to give it time to work, makÂing a menÂtal note to myÂself to avoid such a heavy disÂguise in fuÂture unÂless it was abÂsoÂlutely necÂesÂsary.
Five minÂutes later, the eyeÂbrows were at last gone. I washed my face and went back to the bedÂroom to tame my hair, which had reÂbelled from its conÂfineÂment into a springy mass of waves.
âIâm in the conÂsultÂing room,â SherÂlock called. âJoin me when youâre ready.â
When I enÂtered the conÂsultÂing room, feelÂing more myÂself, SherÂlock had pinned some sheets of paÂper to the wall. Roughly in the midÂdle he had writÂten BOMBER, and on the far left he had writÂten MOÂRIÂARTY?
âAre you thinkÂing about what MyÂcroft said?â I asked as I reached his side.
âI am,â said SherÂlock, âand he has a point. The more I conÂsider it, the more peÂcuÂliar it is that someÂone is spendÂing all this time in enÂcourÂagÂing me to thwart them.â
âInÂdeed,â I said. âYou should write that down.â
SherÂlock stepped forÂward, drew an arÂrow from BOMBER, and wrote at the end of it: ProÂvides clues. Then he wrote NaÂtional PorÂtrait Gallery at the top left of the paÂper and SpeakÂersâ CorÂner furÂther along, and unÂderÂlined both. UnÂder SpeakÂersâ CorÂner he wrote EASY, and unÂder the first headÂing he wrote INÂTERÂMEÂDIÂATE.
âHopeÂfully the next one will be easÂier still,â I said.
SherÂlock drew arÂrows from the name MOÂRIÂARTY, and added the words terse, busiÂnesslike, seÂcreÂtive. From the word BOMBER he added comÂmuÂnicaÂtive, enÂcourÂagÂing, emoÂtional. AfÂter the last word he added a quesÂtion mark.
âI know what you mean,â I said, âbut it is not quite that. It is as if someÂthing is bubÂbling beÂneath the surÂface.â I took the pen from SherÂlock and added danÂgerÂous and acÂcess to exÂploÂsives.
âMyÂcroft is right, isnât he?â SherÂlock sighed and his shoulÂders sagged. âThere is no reaÂson to beÂlieve it is MoÂriÂarty.â
I turned to him. âSo why do you think it is him?â
SherÂlock shrugged. âIt is nothÂing more than a feelÂing ⦠but MyÂcroft does not deal in feelÂings.â He conÂtinÂued to study the wall.
I touched his arm and he looked down at me. âThat does not make MyÂcroft the betÂter man.â
âPerÂhaps.â SherÂlock griÂmaced. âBut it means he will not lisÂten to anyÂthing that is not based in cold, hard fact.â He jabbed at the paÂper with his foreÂfinÂger. âAnd while I am tryÂing to solve this, I am getÂting preÂcisely nowhere with the MonÂtagu case.â He scowled at the wall. âI have a good mind to wire Lestrade and tell him Iâm givÂing MonÂtagu up as a bad job.â
âHave you found nothÂing inÂcrimÂiÂnatÂing?â
âNo, nor even susÂpiÂcious. EiÂther Humphrey MonÂtagu ought to be on the LonÂdon stage as the preÂmier acÂtor of his genÂerÂaÂtion, or he is as honÂest as you or me.
