Chapter Eight

Jo loved Full Skein Ahead all the time, but her favorite version of it was as it was that evening, with the blinds pulled down, not fully blocking the view out the windows, but affording them some privacy, half the lights turned off to give the place a more cozy feel, all of the chairs pulled up around one of the tables in back, a carton of donuts and tall paper cups holding hot coffee, and all her friends chatting with each other as they worked on their individual projects. Music was playing softly from a speaker on the counter, and Jo’s fingers worked the crochet hook and yarn in her hands almost of their own accord.

She was at peace, the myriad of worries she still had to dwell on pushed back for the time being. The crochet club wouldn’t solve any of her problems, but the chance to let go of them for a bit did her good. She was a firm believer that stress was worse for a person’s health than any sort of junk food. Being able to relax during the day was just as important as getting a good night’s sleep.

“It’s summer, how does your boy have homework?” Marge asked. Jo refocused on the conversation. Wendy had been telling them what her kids had been up to. She had three boys, all in high school. Jo did not envy her; she remembered her own high school years well enough.

“Jack’s in the English honors class,” Wendy replied. “If he wants to keep his status as an honor student, he has to do the summer work. They have three books to read and a book report for each of them, and of course, he waited until the last month to even begin doing it. If he had just spaced it out, it wouldn’t seem like so much work.”

“I can’t say I blame him,” Laurie replied. “It’s summer; he’s supposed to be having fun, not slaving over his desk with a notebook and a pen.”

“He is reclining on the couch with a very expensive laptop,” Wendy replied, sounding both amused and irritated. “With air conditioning and a bowl of chips and salsa next to him, or at least that was how he was when I left. It’s hardly torture.”

Jo chuckled. “I’m sure it seems like it is to him. Kids these days just don’t realize how easy they have it.” She blinked and put her work down slowly. Horror filled her. “Oh my goodness, I did not just say that. I sound like – like my grandfather.”

They all laughed, even Emma, the only member of their little club who was currently in high school. She spoke up once they quieted down, her voice timid but amused. “You know, I think the teachers realize we have it a lot easier. That’s why they assign us so much more homework than they did when all of you were young.”

That brought more chuckles, and Jo set her work fully to the side so she could reach for another donut.
