James had the car warmed up when Harriet and Luke came out of the barn.
âI called my mom to see if we could stop by,â he said when theyâd gotten in. âShe asked if we could stay for early dinner. I told her I thought it would be okay, but I needed to ask you two first and would call her back if it wasnât.â
âWe should stop by and pick up the dogs if weâre going to be gone for several hours,â Harriet said.
James smiled.
âDad loves the dogs.â
CHAPTER 30
Will was bent over poking at the logs in the living room fireplace when Scooter and Cyrano raced into the house. Jamesâ mother had opened the door, and he kissed her on the cheek as he walked past her on his way in.
The dogs raced in a circle around the coffee table, stopping to tussle with Will each time around.
âSettle down,â James ordered in a stern voice.
His father straightened.
âOh, let them have a little fun.â
Kathy opened the closet in the entryway.
âCan I take your coats?â
They handed her their outerwear and joined Will at the fire.
âI made some mulled cider,â Kathy announced. âCan I bring everyone a cup?â
âDo you need help?â James asked her.
âMaybe Luke could carry the tray for me.â
Harriet sensed a setup. Whatever James had said to his mom on the phone, she knew her son well enough to know he had ulterior motives; and clearly, she wanted to get it out of the way immediately so as to not spoil the visit.
âYour mother says you wanted to talk to us about something.â Will raised an eyebrow at his son. âOut with it.â
James sighed. âMom is never wrong. We were just out at the stable watching Luke rideââ
âAh,â Will interrupted. âHe told you about our arrangement concerning the saddle.â
James started to speak, but his dad held a hand up.
âThe boy needs a proper saddle. The one they sent with the horse doesnât fit Major and doesnât fit Luke. And itâs been modified to hold police equipment. Iâve been on Major, and heâs trained to neck rein; and I think Luke might like to ride Western.â
âYou mean because thatâs how you ride?â
âIs there something wrong with that?â
Harriet came to the fire, holding her hands out to warm them.
âThereâs nothing wrong with Luke learning to ride Western, and I agreeâI think heâd be happier riding that style. Look, James and I are trying to figure out this whole parenting thing, and maybe weâre wrong, but we were thinking we should know about any arrangements being made on Lukeâs behalf. What if weâd been planning on buying him a Western saddle for graduation?â
Will rubbed a hand across his mouth.
âI hadnât really thought of that.â
Harriet put her hand on Jamesâs arm to stop the retort she could see forming on his lips.
âIt turns out we arenât, and I think your plan sounds fine. Iâm hoping in the future, though, youâll let us in on your plans when it concerns Luke.â
Will smiled at James.
âThis oneâs a keeper.
