Kate looked up, ready to shoot back an answer, but lost the ability to utter even a squeak as she watched him crossing the space between them. He stopped mere inches away so that she could feel the heat coming off him, and every frantic breath she took held the scent of him.

'Or am I getting my signals crossed here? Is it outrage, Kate, or something else? Wasn't I supposed to take no for an answer just now? Were you disappointed because I turned out like all the others? Did you -expect me to follow you in here and take what we both wanted? Is that it, Kate? No surrender, but to the victor go the spoils?' Aidan's voice had become low and husky, with a hint of intimacy that chased shivers along her spine.

She was at once aghast at his misinterpretation and dismayed at her own inability to move away. Her brain said move, but her feet seemed rooted. 'I...'

'Yes, Kate? You... what? Want me to kiss you? Is that it? You want me to storm the citadel and claim it for my own?'

Dry-mouthed, she took a step away, voice uttering a husky denial. 'No!'

'I wonder why I don't believe you.' Laughing, he caught her back with strong hands on her arms. 'I can feel you trembling, Kate, so I think you're going to have to prove you mean that.'

Seeing his head lowering, she began to struggle. But he was too strong and her efforts only half-hearted. A helpless moan of capitulation broke from her throat. Then his lips were claiming hers, his arms going about her to pull her close to the hardness of his body—and Kate was lost, as she had known she would be. A shudder of pure pleasure racked her as her breasts came into contact with the wall of his chest. Her eyes closed and her head fell back, lips parting to the gliding invasion of his tongue. Dizzily she met that silken thrust, joining in an erotic dance that sent spears of flame down through her to start up a delicious throbbing.

With a sigh, her arms reached up around his neck, one hand combing into the thick dark hair, fingers tightening convulsively as the kiss went deeper and deeper. The glide of his hands along her spine brought a shiver of delight, and mindlessly she pressed closer still to his blatantly aroused body.
