I held up the bottle of wine I’d stopped to get as Macy opened the door and ushered me inside. Her apartment was just like I imagined—clean, organized, and with a hint of her floral perfume in the air. That scent quickly gave way to the delicious smell coming from the kitchen. “I wasn’t sure whether I should bring red or white wine, so I just picked one at random. I think it’s the same kind you ordered at dinner the other night.”

She took the bottle from me and raised a brow. “You just randomly happened to pick the same kind of wine I drank with dinner last week?”

“Okay.” I put my hands up in a mock surrender. “Maybe the selection wasn’t quite so random after all.”

She stood on her tiptoes and gave me a peck on the cheek. “Regardless, I appreciate it. And it’ll go perfectly with the primavera stuffed chicken I’m making.”

I was a little surprised that she’d offered a kiss—even if it was just a tiny one on the cheek—since there obviously weren’t any photographers hiding in her apartment to catch us. I definitely wasn’t complaining, though.

The musical sound of her laughter bounced off the walls in the small space as she poured two glasses of wine. “I like to eat healthy food when I can, but I also don’t mind a good excuse to eat a bunch of carbs—like tonight, for example. What kind of hostess would I be if I served my guest something boring and healthy? Especially after you bought a freaking car for me this afternoon.”

“Good point.” I raised my glass to her. “But now that you’ve made me dinner, we can call it even.”

“It’s amazing you’ve held onto your money for this long if you make trades like that.”

I grinned, careful not to laugh and choke on my wine. “Money is made to be spent, right? Besides, you were doing me a huge favor just by being there. It was really the least I could do after you were such a good sport.”

Did I just put my foot in my mouth? Did she flinch as she turned away? It happened so fast that I wasn’t sure, but playing the words back in my head made me second-guess myself.

“I just hope the paparazzi caught some good angles of us with the car.” She glanced my way as she started dishing up the food. Maybe she wasn’t annoyed that I’d called her a good sport. Maybe I’d just imagined that reaction after all. “Speaking
