‘Tara, I’m getting scared. Can we leave?’

They’re standing in the heart of Heathrow’s brightly lit shopping area. Prada, Dior, Balenciaga, Gucci wink at them invitingly, and Dev is freaking out.

‘I think that white shirt will look great on you.’ She ignores his pale face. ‘And we both definitely need new shoes.’

‘Oh, we’re planning a heist? Pehle kyun nahi bataaya? I’m a little inexperienced at stealing things I can’t afford though.’

In response, Tara pulls out a sleek black card. It looks brand new and unused.

‘Company card. For lunch meetings with authors, booking their tickets for Lit Fests, marketing, sudden expenses. Matt had the spending limit removed.’

Dev’s eyes go wide.

‘And since I’m definitely fired once I go back, might as well put it to use for the first time in five years. Matt owes me a heck lot.’

‘Tara, you’re telling me we had an unlimited spending card all this while and we walked around all week looking ‘homeless?!’

There’s a pause. She considers this, then says, ‘Why is it always a ‘we’?’

Dev fumes!

‘What?’ she says. ‘You don’t like Papaji’s money and I don’t like using Matt’s. How is it different?’

Dev tries to calm himself down, trying to not think of all the moments that card could have helped them. Perhaps this is the frustration he put Anagha through.

‘Okay,’ he finally says. ‘Are you a good shopper?’

She smiles, happy to have him on board. ‘I’ve … never actually shopped for fun.’

‘Brilliant. I have terrible taste, poor judgement and no control, by the way.’

‘Excellent! Best candidates for a limitless card.’

They walk into the first shiny shop they encounter, and Dev’s passing thought hangs in the air.

‘Hang on, Tara. Lit Fests? So, like a festival where authors get high and properly lit?’
