THE NEXT MORNING, I had to meet my sister at the club again. Tix and I said goodbye at the front door. I’d see him later when we investigated the next descendant on the list.

When I pulled up to the club, I saw my brother’s car in the parking lot. I rolled my eyes. Great. My brother was never on his best behavior.

I got out of the car, wondering why he was even here. He’d turned his nose up last time he’d been here. I pushed through the front doors of the club and the scent of lavender bleach hit me.

Okay, this was different. The floor was no longer covered with grime and dust. It sparkled and shined now. All the broken tables and chairs from the day before were gone. The walls glowed black and silver, and the bar from the day before had been replaced.

Okay. I could get with this. It now looked like a nice upscale club that needed a few improvements. I liked it. I liked it a lot. It had potential. Something I’d seen that first day, but I hadn’t wanted to admit it.

Now there was no denying it. “I like what you’ve done with the place,” I said, turning in a small circle and looking around.

“No thanks to you!” I found my sister over by the bar, broom in her hand. What was she sweeping? The place was spotless.

“You didn’t do all this in one day,” I said to her, still checking the place out. “You used a few hexes and rumbles. I know you did.”

She took a seat on top of the new bar, folding her legs under her. “Of course, I did,” she said. “Why wouldn’t I use a few spells? You use them all the time when building houses and stadiums for your clients.”

Well, she had me there. I craned my head around the corner. “Where’s...”

“This kitchen is a disaster!” my brother belted out. He sounded like a snotty aristocrat. “Xeyn! How am I supposed to do anything with this mess?”

I rocked back on my heels, a small smile on my face. “You didn’t put a spell on the kitchen to clean it up?

She waved a hand backward. “That’s his domain. Let him hex it the way he likes.”

I stepped closer, whispering so he couldn’t hear me. “Has he agreed then?”

She shrugged. “He won’t say the words, but he wouldn’t be here, in the kitchen if he wasn’t already sold.”

She was right about that. My eyes went to the ceiling, then to the floor. “I need to check for any structural damage, make sure the pipes and water lines are correctly set up.”

I tilted my head toward the large strobe beam. “As for the electricity. I’ll have to—"

“Stop,” Xeyn hopped from the bar. “I trust you. I don’t need to hear about it. Call Red. You two do whatever you need to. Get us up to code.” She smiled. “See. We work good as a team.”

“Look!” we heard Trick yell from the kitchen.
