My nerves were all over the place. In my head Iâd planned this to feel different. To be different.
But that talk with Cait, that knowledge that so many Fae had been imprisoned and collared and that Fain had been apart of it seemed to wreak havoc with my conscience. How could I be with someone capable of that? How could I just turn a blind eye and pretend that none of it had happened?
If Fain could sense where my head was at, he didnât say anything. He just sat there, beside me, staring into the fireplace as it crackled and roared.
Iâd had a tree brought up while we were at the feast. The guards had looked at me as if I were mad but Iâd explained what I wanted and to my relief when weâd returned here, it was stood, beside the hearth, leaning against the wall like they didnât know what to do with it.
Fain hadnât said anything beyond a raise of his eyebrows. Heâd simply walked over and got the fire going, while Iâd sat on the floor and watched him.
âIn my world we have a thing called Christmas.â I said breaking the silence.
âAnd the tree is part of that?â He replied.
I nodded. âIt was a religious festival but now itâs about family, about friends. Itâs tradition to have a tree and to decorate it.â
âWith what?â
I smiled, producing the box that Iâd spent months building up. It was full of ribbons and trinkets, and in truth, none of it was particular âChristmassyâ and yet it would do.
âDo we need to make the tree stand?â Fain asked.
I let out a laugh. âThat would definitely help.â
He got up, disappeared for a moment and came back with a bucket. âWill this do?â
I nodded, lifting the tree as he put the bucket in place.
Clearly, he was letting me lead this, and I set about laying a red blanket to hide the bucket before I started laying out all the decorations.
âIs there some sort of plan to this?â
I smiled, âNo plan,â I said meeting his curious gaze. âJust take what you like, put it where you think it will look good.â
He gave me a look like he couldnât tell if this was all some sort of a prank but he picked up a glass ball that Iâd wrapped a ribbon around to turn it into something you could hang. He tilted his head, before placing it one of the lower branches.
âPerfect.â I said.
He raised an eyebrow but took another, doing the same.
As we slowly put all the pieces on I told him stories of Santa Claus, of Rudolf, or all the little traditions that came with Christmas.
âSo, every year you did this?â
âYes, every year. In my world we have all four seasons each year. Christmas falls in December.â
âWhat is December?â
âThatâs the name of the month.â I explained.
He frowned more. âYou donât name your months after the moon cycles?â
I smirked. âNo.â
âSo, every year you did this, you decorated a tree, and you gave gifts?â
I tensed, sighing as an old pain I hadnât felt in forever suddenly flared.
