JAXON'S BOOTS CARRIED him down familiar streets now grown strange and threatening in the dark shadows. He drew his cloak tighter against the descending night's frigid air, though the most biting chill sprang from within.

Hazel's wounded eyes seemed to pierce Jaxon's very spirit, her unspoken disappointment more painful than the cruelest curse. He had let volatile emotion overwhelm sense, allowing poisonous words to drive fresh thorns of division between them. His fervent urgency to act had only pushed her further away.

So lost was Jaxon in desolate rumination that he nearly stumbled into the tall, robed figure who suddenly manifested soundlessly across his path. Heart leaping to his throat, Jaxon flung a hand up defensively, magic roiling close beneath his skin.

But instead of attack, the figure merely chuckled, an oddly melodic sound at odds with his imposing frame. "Be at peace, my friend. I mean you no harm, merely happened upon you rather abruptly in my evening stroll."

Though the stranger kept his hood raised, obscuring features, Jaxon caught the telltale glint of amusement in his shadowed eyes. Their last midnight encounter came rushing back, along with the alluring promises made. Jaxon lowered his glowing palm warily.

"My apologies for startling you," the man continued conversationally. "But I cannot help noticing you seem...troubled of late. Weighing difficult decisions, I'd imagine?"

When Jaxon remained prudently silent, he pressed on. "I understand such struggle intimately. How it feels when your hands are tied watching fools lead the cause you hold dear toward disaster."

Jaxon stiffened, pulse quickening at his uncanny perception. The stranger leaned in close, dropping his voice to an insistent whisper. "But know you need not endure powerlessly. There are...alternatives to inaction. If you wish to save this town, I can teach you the necessary skills. The choice is yours."

Before Jaxon could muster a response, the figure drew back, face still obscured. "Consider carefully, but quickly. Time runs short." With those portentous parting words, he melted into the gloom, leaving Jaxon alone with his conflicted thoughts swirling darker than ever before.
