The following day Emily was all smiles. "I still can't believe all of those gifts! I wasn't sure who was more surprised, us or the kids. It was really sweet."

Hannah had thought the same thing the night before. “It was. It was Grant who bought the gifts.”

Emily smiled smugly. “I knew it!”

“Really? How?” She just shrugged. “I have a good feeling about him.”

“I don’t know why he did it though, why go to all that trouble?” Hannah sat at her desk and rested her hand on her chin, thoughtfully.

Emily walked over from the doorway and sat across from her. "I have no idea, but it was pretty sweet of him."

"I don't know. There seem to be two possible reasons. He wants to impress the partners and undermine me. Or he genuinely wanted to do something for the kids."

"I guess we'll see," Emily said. Although she already knew the answer. She also knew that Hannah would need to figure it out for herself.

When it came to the staff meeting later in the morning, he took no credit whatsoever.

As they were going over the minutes for the meeting, one of the senior partners asked, "How did it go last night, Hannah? From all reports, it seems to be a success."

“It was wonderful. The kids were so happy, and there was a huge turnout. And Grant…”

Grant cut her off by reaching under the table and squeezing her knee. "Got sick eating too many marshmallows from operating the hot chocolate station, but that's not something we need to share with the class, Hannah."

They all laughed. He looked at her and smiled. With a puzzled look, she responded simply with, "It was a great night."

Grant looked over at his uncle as if to remind him. “She’s as efficient out of the office as she is in it.”

"Her efficiency knows no bounds, and we are grateful for it." Robert smiled at her and said, "Great job, Hannah. Glad to hear that everything is going well. Keep us updated and let me know if you need anything."

Why had he cut her off? He could have told them about the boatload of presents he had delivered. While the meeting carried on, she was lost in thought. They discussed cases and potential clients; and for once, she didn't think about it. Her mind was elsewhere. She looked over at Grant, and he gave her a brief, quick grin. She smiled back before she could help herself, then looked discreetly at her legal pad. It took everything in her to focus on the things she once was so excited to hear.

After the meeting, she went to his office. The more she thought about things, the more she couldn't help but feel guilty that he hadn't take any credit for such a kind thing. What was his angle? After taking a deep breath, she lightly knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

Hannah walked in, and Grant motioned to one of the seats across from his desk. She hadn't intended to come here and sit down and have a conversation.
