Chapter Five

Three days before Christmas…

Roman hung up the phone. “They have confirmed that all of the gifts will be delivered in two days. While the schedule is tight, that should allow enough time to wrap them if everyone assists.”

“Thank you,” Lysander said. “That’s one less thing for me to worry about.”

“Are there still things remaining on your Christmas to-do list?” asked Bryan.

“Yes. I still want us to have a movie night. Perhaps tomorrow? We have a theatre room. We can pick out a couple of Christmas movies and set up popcorn and hot chocolate. The kids will love it.” Lysander leaned around Roman. “Max, make sure you invite the enforcers that are not on duty. The more people who come, the more fun it will be for the kids.”

“Yes, Consort. If you insist,” Max sighed.

Lysander nodded. “I do insist. It’s good for everyone to spend time together socially. It can’t only be about fighting, Max.”

“They are enforcers. Fighting and protection are their primary function.”

“That may be the case for you. But for me, they are a part of Roman’s family. I will be including them in all family activities whenever possible.”

“Yes, Consort,” Max said.

Lysander opened his mouth to say more when a thunderous noise came from the hallway, pulling everyone’s attention to the door. “What in the world? It sounds like a herd of elephants out there.” As the noise drew nearer, a few yips could be heard in the air.

“More like a herd of wolf pups,” Bryan said.

Lysander squinted as he listened. Barely distinguishable over the racket he could hear someone yelling, “Ho, ho, ho.”

“That sounds like Tommy.” He looked up at Roman. “You have better hearing than me. Is that him?”

Roman nodded. “I believe so.”

“What in the world is he up to now?” Lysander got and rushed across the room, the rest of the men right on his heels. Throwing the door open, he stared open mouthed as nine wolf pups raced down the hall, their nails clicking loudly on the tiles. Every one of them wore little red Santa hats, the puffy white balls bouncing with their steps. Around their necks, the pups wore collars covered with noisily tinkling bells. Each of them held the end of a steamer of sparkly garland in their mouths. The other ends of the long steamers were clutched in Tommy’s hands. Lysander grinned at his friend, who was rollerblading behind the pups, urging them on in their mad dash down the hallway.

Lysander yelled down the hall, trying to catch them before they went around the corner. “Tommy, what are you doing?”

“Whoa, reindeer,” Tommy called out. All of the pups came to a stop, plopping down on their butts.

Lysander exchanged a grin with Roman before lunging down the hall to see what craziness Tommy was up to now.

“You guys almost gave me a heart attack with all that noise,” he said.

“You should know the best fun is usually the noisiest.” Tommy laughed, holding up his fist for Lysander to bump knuckles in agreement.
