Chapter 13

“Would you like for me to check out the woods for you?” he asked as we walked toward the house.

“I couldn’t ask you to do that,” I said.

“I wouldn’t have volunteered unless I wanted to help.”

Would he have offered if he was a bad guy? That meant he had to be okay, right? Maybe I should let him check it out. Though I hated to ask a guest to do something that could potentially be dangerous.

“Well, I guess if you really want to check it out. But I want to go with you. I can’t let a guest go in the wooded area alone. Insurance liability, you know?”

“Yes, I guess that would be an issue. Paranormal insurance is pricey too. I would want your premium to go up.” He smiled.

I knew he was teasing me. But he had a point. If the insurance company knew I was sending guests into the woods to look for shifters, then they’d change me double.

“Let’s go,” I said, motioning toward the area we’d just let. “There’s a good entrance to the woods over there. I use it for the hiking trail.”

Blake and I walked in the direction we’d just come from moments earlier. I couldn’t spend too much time in the woods because I needed to get the next class under way. Though I suppose everyone would welcome the extra break time. However, I hated not sticking to a schedule. That seemed totally unprofessional.

“Have you seen anything unusual?” Blake asked.

I glanced over at his handsome face. “Why do you ask? Have you seen something?”

Now was the time I really needed to ask if he was truly casting magic. I’d asked before, but now was the time for honesty. Why did I feel nervous asking? I suppose because I was afraid of the answer. I didn’t want it to be the wrong one. I wanted him to be the perfect guy. As soon as we reached the edge of the woods, I paused. The magic surrounded us. The feeling was undeniable. There was no way he didn’t sense that. I had to say something.

“Do you feel that?” I whispered.

If someone was hiding, then I didn’t want them to hear me mention that I felt their magic. If they knew then they might be prepared for when I cast magic against them. Because that looked as if it would be the only solution for my current predicament. If Blake was responsible, I liked to think I would know. How had he cast a spell with me right here?

Blake locked eyes with me. “I feel it. Where’s it coming from?”

“It’s not you? Did you cast a spell?” I asked.

At least this came me a reason to just come right out and ask him. I was kind of surprised that I’d blurted it out.

He chuckled. “I have no magic ability whatsoever.”

My eyes widened. “You don’t?”

“Why do you seem so shocked?” he asked.

“It’s just that I sensed magic when I was by your room. I thought it was you.
