My head is reeling as I amble away from the cabin. I feel like I’ve left a part of my heart behind, but I need some space to think. I’m not mad at Madison for not telling me she was engaged—I’m mad at the whole damn situation. Her family sounds fucking insane. All I want is to get her away from it all, but she’s insisting on marrying the jackass who showed up at my door earlier. The thought makes me sick to my stomach. She’ll never be happy with a guy like him…and I’m not sure that I can ever be happy without her. In the short time she’s been staying at my cabin, she’s captivated me completely. My feelings for her are so much bigger than me. They’re impossible to control. For the first time ever, I think I truly understand how my best friend, Axel, must have felt when he fell in love with my daughter. At the time, I didn’t understand why they couldn’t just put their feelings aside and move on. Now I get it.

A short blast of a horn pulls me out of my thoughts, and I look up to see a car driving up the mountain path toward me. The sight makes me smile, and for a moment, my heart feels a little lighter. It’s my daughter’s car.

“Hi, dad!” Emily calls, slowing to a stop and opening her car window. Luckily the mountain path is deserted as usual. “What are you doing out here?”

“Hi, honey. I, uh, just wanted to take a walk. You’re heading home early.”

“Yeah, Norma let me leave a bit earlier today.” Emily grins. “She’s really understanding about Hazel and my need for flexible hours.” She must see something troubled in my expression because her smile wavers as she looks at me. “I haven’t seen you since you came for those bandages. What happened with that girl outside your cabin? Was she okay?”

I nod, feeling my throat constrict. “Yeah, she’s okay. She sprained her ankle, that’s all. She’s been staying with me, but I’m taking her home tomorrow.”

“Oh, so that’s why you’ve been keeping the garage closed!” Emily says. “Axel wondered why you kept giving him days off.”

I just nod, and Emily frowns. “Are you okay, dad? You look upset.”

I force a smile. “Don’t worry about me, sweetie. I’m fine. I’ll come and see you tomorrow.”

She doesn’t look convinced that I’m okay, but thankfully she drops it. “Okay, good. See you tomorrow then.”

“Give Hazel a kiss from me.”

Emily beams at the sound of her daughter’s name. “Will do.” She turns back to the road, ready to drive away when she says, “Hey, isn’t that Rhett?”

I follow her line of sight and see Rhett heading down the mountain path toward us. “Yeah. Probably just needs some more tools. I’ll go see what he wants.”

“Good luck getting him to pay any attention to you,” Emily says with a sly smile. “These days all he ever thinks about is Belle from the flower store in Winterdale.
