Saturday September 25

Left for St Pauls. The trip has been great fun; but how glad I am it is over and I am to see Alice!

Sunday September 26

Reached Chicago.

Monday September 27

Left Chicago.

Tuesday September 28

Stopped at Niagara Falls.

Wednesday September 29

Reached New York and in the evening Chestnut Hill.

Thursday September 30

I am so happy that I hardly know what to do. My own beautiful queen is the same as ever and yet with a certain added charm that I do not know how to describe; I can not take my eyes off her; she is so pure and holy that it seems almost profanation to touch her, no matter how gently and tenderly; and yet when we are alone I can not bear her to be a minute out of my arms. I have been gradually getting frightfully homesick for her; my happiness now is almost too great.

Friday October 1

Spent the day with my own heart’s darling, my sweetest mistress.

Saturday October 2

I am living in a dream of delight with my darling, my true love.

Sunday October 3

In the evening I with intense regret had to go back to New York; but it will be the last separation from my darling, for three weeks from Wednesday we are married—it makes me so happy I am almost afraid.

Monday October 4

I am staying with dear Aunt Annie & Uncle Jimmie; in their cosy little house. I am busy with wedding presents and getting all ready—and am dreadfully homesick for Alice.

Wednesday October 6

Entered the Columbia Law School; I shall be there every day about six hours, from nine till half-past three. Am having a lovely time at Aunt Annie’s but miss Alice dreadfully. I am going to give her a diamond crescent a ruby bracelet and a saphire [sic] ring—in all about 2500 dollars! I have been spending money like water for these last two years, but shall economise after I am married. Three weeks from today we are married! I hardly dare believe it; it is too good. Oh my darling, my darling!

Friday October 8

Went out to Oyster Bay. Everything looked very cosy and homelike and it was lovely to see the dear quartette—Elliott, Pussie, Bysie & Mother. We have very much to talk over about the wedding.

Saturday October 9

Spent the day in the open air, chiefly playing tennis with Nell and Fred Weeks, both of whom I beat. Emlen, Alfred and Griswold came up to pass Sunday.

Monday October 11

Went back to New York. I like the law school very well so far.24 The cousins have all acted like trumps, and have sent Alice beautiful presents; Emlen a pearl ring, West a bracelet &c &c.

Wednesday October 13

Only two weeks from today; my happiness is so great that it makes me almost afraid.
