Chapter Fourteen
Lily wrinkled up her nose under the mud mask and her entire face crinkled.
âI look just like an old lady!â she said, giggling at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. It had tingled so much on her skin, sheâd insisted on taking a look.
âAh yes,â Sandy assured her. âBut, when itâs all said and done, youâll be glowing like a princess.â
The child stared up at her. âJust like you do?â
âIâ¦what? Me?â
Lily nodded vigorously.
Sandy stared at Lou. âWhat do you think, Lou? Am I glowing?â
âNot half as much as you were on the dance floor,â she said with a sassy edge.
âHush!â Sandy told her in a whisper.
âItâs true,â little Lily said. âYou glow more when my daddyâs around.â
Sandy stared into the mirror, trying to see if she noticed anything different. Her mom had warned her that might be part of the package: the mating glow. But, so far, Sandy hadnât seen it. Sheâd merely detected a slight blush on her cheeks the moment Lily had mentioned Ben. âCome on, now,â Sandy instructed, dampening a washcloth. âItâs time to remove your mask and work on your hair.â
Lily excitedly pursed her lips as Sandy gently scrubbed off the facemask. Sheâd purchased it on her lunch hour at Mystic Magi, where the products were all-natural and none of them were tested on animals. Next, she had bought two special bottles of nail polish from Christmas Town Drugs. The base coat was a sparkly purple, and sheâd painted pretty silvery stars on top of it.
Lou had helped with the preliminary soaking, nail filing, and hand massage, and it was obvious Lily delighted in the pampering. Sandy gave one last swipe with the washcloth then asked Lily to wash her face with soap and water. After she did, her entire complexion shone bright pink.
âWell?â Sandy asked, setting her hands on Lilyâs shoulders. âWhat do you think?â
Lily peeked back into the mirror then shyly at Lou. âIâm glowing!â
âYes, dear,â Lou said sweetly. âAnd you look lovely.â
âNow for the hair!â Sandy announced, as Lily followed her back into their âspa area,â which was really her drafting table, covered with a towel and lots of beauty items scattered on top.
Lily sat on a stool while Sandy brushed out her silky brown hair. âI like this day spa.â
âWell then, youâll just have to come back again soon.â Sandy glanced at Lou who concurred immediately.
âAbsolutely.â
Sandy set down the brush then took care to French braid Lilyâs hair, carefully weaving each section over the next one. While Sandy had always enjoyed children, she hadnât really looked after any in some time. Not since sheâd done babysitting in high school. Something about tending to Lily made her feel happy and good, like she was in the right place at exactly the right time.
Lily straightened her spine and peeked back over her shoulder. âI canât wait to see it when youâre done.â
Sandy leaned toward her. âYou did bring the crown, I hope?â
Lily grinned and eagerly nodded her head.
âItâs in a bag by her coat,â Lou offered.
