Chapter Seventeen

Angie, Finn, and Dmitri exchange concerned glances as they tried to wrap their heads around Pauly’s public outburst. Angie opened her mouth to speak and immediately closed it.

“Umm, yea..that..was, uh..” Angie said, stumbling on her words.

“That was intense, for sure.” Finn replied.

“To say the least. Geesh!” Angie looked around the farmer’s market, still reeling from the recent incident.

Dmitri stood next to Angie, cleaning his fur vigorously. Angie looked down at him as he looked up at her. “That made me anxious! And I’m not easily startled like that.”

Angie bent down and picked Dmitri up, giving him a gentle hug. “Now, it’s my turn to calm your nerves,” she said as she gently stroked his fur. Dmitri nuzzled his face in her arms, purring deeply while his nerves simmered down.

The three of them began to make their way towards the edge of the farmer’s market. Angie remained silent as her thoughts still reeled from Pauly's erratic behavior while they exited the park and onto the main street sidewalk.

“Well, besides the strange and crazy moment we just had with Pauly, there's still one more person we need to look into. Lilly Poole,” Finn said.

Angie furrowed her brow with a puzzled look on her face. "Lilly?”

Finn explained, "Well, Caitlin mentioned Nia's rocky relationship with her. And given Lilly's materialistic nature and jealousy towards Nia's success, it's worth investigating if she had any involvement in Nia's death."

“Yeah, Caitlin told me the same thing,” Angie replied. “She described Lilly as a dramatic party girl type who stayed close to Nia. It was hard to tell if they were really friends or not. But it sounded like a phony type of friendship.”

She could vividly picture Lilly's face from the diner that day. Lilly was perfectly made up, designer clothes clinging to her slim frame as she loudly guffawed at some joke. The looks she gave Nia could tell of a jealous type of girl… but was she capable of murder? She wasn’t sure of it but acknowledged that Lilly was someone that needed to be questioned.

"Did she say what kind of rumors Lilly was spreading?" Angie asked, her brow furrowing.

Finn shrugged. "Caitlin didn't give me specifics. Just that they were nasty things about Nia, being spread around to mutual friends."

Dmitri piped up from beside Angie. "Doesn't take a genius to figure out what those rumors might've been about." His tail swished in annoyance. "We already know Nia was fooling around with her married boss. I'll bet that little viper Lilly was blabbing all over town about their affair. Especially if it gave her a chance to get ahead or noted popularity."

Nodding slowly, Angie could see Dmitri's reasoning made sense. Lilly seemed like the type to revel in salacious gossip, especially if it took someone else down a peg. Her friendship with Nia seemed more frenemy territory.

Angie thought more about Dmitri’s words for a moment. “But do you think she’s capable of murder?” Angie asked aloud.

“Anything is possible. People will surprise you at the lengths they would go to get ahead,” Finn replied.
