Chapter Sixteen

“Shhh! Do you hear that?” Dimitri’s hushed, tense whisper reverberated throughout the room, causing Angie to stop shuffling papers and strain to hear what was happening.

“Oh no!”, she said, her voice a frantic whisper as she hurriedly began stuffing papers back into the file box in front of her.

Dimitri shook his whiskers in disgust. “I knew this would happen—I felt it. We have to get out of here, and now!”

The air crackled with palpable tension as Angie and Dmitri scrambled to make their exit from Tony's apartment. The sound of raised voices and the pounding of footsteps getting ever closer outside sent Angie's heart racing, her mind whirling with a desperate need to escape before they were discovered.

"Angie, what are you doing? Hurry up!" Dmitri hissed, his emerald eyes narrowed with a feline intensity. His puffy tail twitched back and forth, his senses on high alert as he prowled beside her.

Angie nodded, her fingers flying as she hastily gathered up the stack of photographs and financial records she had gathered. "I'm right behind you," she whispered, her voice taut with urgency.

Dmitri led the way, his movements fluid and graceful as he slipped through the apartment, his keen gaze scanning the shadows for any sign of danger. Angie followed close on his heels, her heart pounding in her ears as the sounds of commotion grew ever closer.

"The door!" Dmitri suddenly hissed, his tail pointing towards the partially open door leading out into the main hallway. “We have seconds, if we’re lucky!”

Angie felt her heart pounding in her chest as she and Dmitri slipped out of Tony's apartment and into the dimly lit hallway. The weight of the evidence they had uncovered pressed heavily in her side bag, a tangible reminder of the high stakes they were facing.

Dmitri's emerald eyes scanned their surroundings with a feline intensity, his tail twitching back and forth as he moved with a graceful, predatory gait. “Be as quiet as you can. Those guards could be anywhere at this point.”

Angie nodded, her grip tightening on the precious photographs and financial records she held. "I know," she replied, her voice low and tense. "But I can't shake the feeling that we're on the cusp of something big. We have to keep going, Dmitri."

As they crept down the hallway, Angie suddenly heard the faint sound of voices echoing from around the corner. She froze, her breath catching in her throat, and pressed herself against the wall, pulling Dmitri close beside her.

"Shhh," she hissed, her eyes narrowing as she strained to make out the words.

Dmitri's ears perked up, his tail twitching with feline curiosity. "Guards?”, he asked silently as he watched Angie closely.

Angie leaned forward, inching toward the corner of the hallway, her heart pounding in her ears as she tried to make sense of the muffled voices.

"... can't risk it, not now," a male voice hissed, laced with a sense of urgency and fear.

"But we have to do something!" a female voice retorted, her tone sharp and desperate. "We can't just let it all fall apart.
