Chapter Sixteen

“I wonder what’s taking him so long?” Angie said, her eyes on the warehouse.

Heat arose off her skin from the anxious anticipation. What was going on in there? Was he okay? Did Angelo spot him?

“You know, there was a time when you couldn’t wait for him to leave,” Dmitri stated. “There’s obviously a reason you want him around now.”

“Look,” Angie replied, “if something happens to him, my father will-”

“Oh, come on,” Dmitri interrupted. “You’ve got to have a better excuse than that. Your father would just replace him with another snitch of a body guard just like him.”

“So that’s what you think about him...”

“I’m just saying, you need to admit that you like him.” Dmitri chuckled.

Angie gasped, her eyes wide after hearing Dmitri say it out loud. “Take that back!”

“And it looks like the feeling might be mutual,” he continued to taunt. “You’re sweet on each other.”

“If you weren’t such a cute animal, I’d be knocking some sense into you right now!” Angie scowled.

The banter continued for just a few minutes, before Angie sighed and gave up on trying to convince Dmitri it was strictly professional. She then turned their attention to the list of suspects. Something productive needed to come from this long wait.

"Alright, let's go over the suspects again," Angie said, pulling out her notebook. "We have a few people with potential motives."

Dmitri stretched and curled up on the backseat. "Let's hear it, then. Who's on your list?"

"First, there's Amelia Watson, Giancarlo's scorned ex-girlfriend," Angie stated.

"There’s no fury like a woman scorned," Dmitri quipped. "She could've taken things too far this time."

Angie nodded, considering the information about Amelia. "When we were eavesdropping on Finn's conversation with her, Amelia mentioned that Giancarlo was cheating on her with another woman."

"Plus there’s the mistress’s boyfriend," Dmitri added, raising a feline eyebrow in a way only he could.

Angie tapped her chin thoughtfully. "A love triangle gone wrong, perhaps?"

"It's possible," Dmitri agreed. "But maybe it wasn’t the boyfriend at all. When Amelia found out about the other woman, it could've pushed her over the edge."

“Dmitri,” Angie said. “Do you think the photo of the woman in the locket was the one he cheated on Amelia with?”

Dmitri's tail swished excitedly. "Oh, that's a good point! If Amelia discovered the locket and realized Giancarlo was cheating, she might have finally snapped and decided to get rid of him for good."

Angie nodded, a sense of unease growing in the pit of her stomach. She couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right. "Exactly," she said, jotting down a note. "Next, we have Freddie Abari, another artist who was jealous of Giancarlo's success and always critical of his work."

"Professional jealousy can be a powerful motive," Dmitri mused. "Freddie might have wanted to eliminate his competition."

As Dmitri spoke, Angie's mind began to wander, her thoughts drifting to Matteo and what might be happening inside the warehouse. She tried to focus on the list of suspects, but her concern for Matteo's safety kept intruding. What if Angelo had
