Others avoid clichés simply because sincerity suddenly bursts forth. Shortly after that wretched day, I attend a dinner as a member of a panel of literary judges. During the meal I feel myself dying, in an empty, foreign world, where the only thing that draws me back to Cometa’s world is the account that O. is giving of the book she’s writing about the years Ava Gardner spent in Madrid and of her interviews with the few people still around who took part in that world. We’re suddenly joined by another member, who offers me his condolences. He mentions a woman friend of his, a writer whose partner died. And then he concludes with disarming frankness, “Poor thing, she never again did anything worthwhile.” And I think: Fucking brilliant! Recently, when I’m approached by people who want to talk to me—and I’m tremendously grateful to them—I find that my thinking has become rather minimalistic. My only thought now is: Fucking brilliant! At the moment, I can’t come up with anything else. I’ll deliberate on this later.
