Chapter Twelve

By the end of the following week, almost all the deputies were back at work. The rumors Darren started about Brooks having a girlfriend were starting to die down. He wished it was as easy to forget the scene that had taken place in his living room. Telling Jaclyn about Eli ranked among the hardest things he’d ever done. It felt like a spike was being driven through his heart when she said it was a stretch to call them friends.

Through it all, her loyalty to Eli never wavered. He admired that quality about her even if he knew it to be misplaced. Since her dramatic exit from his house, he’d only heard from her once. It was a seven word text acknowledging receipt of the raincoat he mailed to her.

After taking Loki for his morning run, Brooks drove to Jett’s place. They’d been working hard to get ready for the opening of Christmas tree season. Today they were collecting cuttings for the fresh-cut wreaths Jett’s sister Demi would be making to sell along with the trees.

In the absence of his father, who died last year, Jett had set himself up as Demi’s protector. He lost no time letting his circle of friends know she was off limits. Violators would be dealt with accordingly. So far no one had tested the boundaries. At six-foot-seven, Jett was an imposing figure, and his personality leaned toward acting first and asking questions later. The prohibition regarding Demi wasn’t a problem for Brooks since his interests lay elsewhere, but there had been loud protests and complaints from everyone else.

When he arrived at the tree farm, he was surprised to see a green and white sheriff’s department SUV parked outside the motorcycle shop. As he got closer, he spotted the broken window and heard Jett’s irate voice. The suspects better be glad Jett hadn’t caught them in the act. They’d be spending the night in the hospital versus a holding cell.

“It was those teenagers who live down the road,” Jett was saying. “I’ve seen them sneaking around before.”

Brooks walked up behind Kip, who was standing inside the door of the shop, notepad and pen in hand. “What’s going on, guys?”

Kip turned his head to look at him. “Your friend had some early morning visitors.”

“They didn’t get much,” Jett said. “Just what was left in the cash box.”

Brooks rolled his eyes. “A cigar box isn’t a cash box. I’ve been telling you for months to get a safe.” He took stock of the scene. A tall shelving unit had been knocked over when the suspects came through the window. Tools and motorcycle parts littered the concrete floor. “They made a mess while they were here.”

Jett’s scowl deepened. “You got that right. I say we make them clean it up.”

Kip shook his head. “Can’t do that, man. You’ve got no proof. It’s your word against theirs. I’ll go talk to some of your neighbors. We’ll see if anyone saw or heard anything.”

“Like that’ll do any good,” Jett grumbled.
