Chapter Eight

Jo staggered out of the woods, half dragging the reluctant sheep with her. She moved over to the side of the trailer and opened the small door there, somehow managing to get the sheep up and inside. Not bothering to tie this one up, she simply unclipped the lead rope and then shut the door, leaving all three sheep safely enclosed in the trailer. Then, she paused, leaning against the side of her vehicle and taking a deep, shaky breath. She grabbed her phone out of the front seat and began making her way up toward the house as she dialed the number for the local police department.

What came next was pure confusion as she tried to explain both to the police and to a very disgruntled Eve what she had found. She wasn’t sure how, but somehow, she managed to get across to both questioning parties that yes, there was a dead body in the woods and someone official needed to come out here right now.

They came only minutes later, lights and sirens cutting through the silence of the street. Across the road, an elderly woman was standing on her porch, her arms crossed as she surveyed the scene. Betsy, Jo remembered. That must be the woman Eve was talking about the other day.

She led the police toward the body but didn’t have to get close enough to see it again. After that, there was nothing required of her, at least not for a while. The person who owned the property got involved, too, of course. It wasn’t on Lorraine’s property; she had been right about that. Still, she had no doubt in her mind that it was somehow related to Lorraine’s death. Two bodies, so close together… and the one she had found had been hidden for a while.

She was still waiting for the police to come and talk to her when the thought hit her with all the force of a train. It wasn’t an idea so much as a certainty. Lorraine had been killed because of that body. She must have seen something, maybe while she was out feeding the sheep, maybe she had even seen whoever killed the missing man hiding his body back there…

And, she had died because of it. Alex’s words came back to her. If someone is willing to kill once, they’ll do it again. I can’t think of a better motive for murder than keeping yourself out of prison.

When the police finally came to question her, she told them her thoughts. They accepted what she had to say with the same, calm expressions they had when she answered their other questions. She felt helpless, useless, not knowing what they
