AZENYAH

Azenyah wasn’t sure when Khyros appeared behind her on the bed as she curled up with his blankets. All she knew was that she couldn’t stop the tears from falling. He held her tight against him as her body rocked, the deep sobs wrenching out of her without her control.

For some reason, the dark greyness set in even deeper, not quite numbing her like before, but still a heavy weight on her, raking up her memories and turbulent emotions at every opportunity.

The next morning upon waking, when the memories returned, Azenyah wept. Losing her family, society, and dragon hit her all over again, sending her into uncontrollable sobbing fits. It was a repeating torture that felt like it would never end.

Khyros was still there, holding her and letting her cry, and she greedily took pleasure in the feel of him; his warmth and scent a comfort that soothed her in a way she couldn’t resist. He didn’t talk or ask her questions, just took pleasure in the feel of her, wanting his nose on her skin, inhaling her as if it were the only way he could breathe. There was something purely instinctual about the attention he gave her, and something within her responded, preening at the attentions of her mate. She fucking hated it. Even more now that she knew he took no responsibility for what happened to the female dragorai.

He was among the worst of the alphas who, once they discovered what had been happening, sought to blame everyone and everything but themselves; first it was the females’ fault, then the female dragons’ fault, then the Goddesses for making them that way. It was infuriating and so disheartening. Even though she’d initially thought him insane for not recognizing her as his female, now she was glad. She didn’t want him to ever know. Of course, he would find out eventually. His instincts to mark her and knot her and even comfort her when she was upset were indicative of an alpha who recognized his mate on an instinctual level, and that would only grow with time. And if his clan noticed and brought it to his attention, she would never have the chance to leave.

The next day, it was the same. Khyros ensured she got up, ate her meals, and didn’t sink into the abyss she’d been in before, but this time when she watched him, the darkness in him she’d always noticed had a context. She could see in his eyes the heavy weight of loss that he had experienced. When she met him on the island or when she was imprisoned in his cell, she’d never realized exactly what it was she’d been seeing in him, but now she recognized it as the loss she was suffering. He understood this pain, but what exactly had he lost that could have caused it? Was it because of the war and losing the dragorai culture or something else? It was hard to believe the Vattoro clan would take
