Hadley paced in front of Sharon’s empty desk while she waited for Barbara. When the door finally swung open, Hadley turned to face her. But it wasn’t only Barbara entering, Suze followed in after the older woman.
Suze’s eyes were wide. “I saw her rushing down Main Street from my studio and figured it was something big. She wouldn’t tell me anything until we got here, though,” Suze explained.
Barbara nodded, catching her breath.
“Paul is with another witness, but if you tell me what you found, it might be enough to interrupt him,” Hadley explained.
Josie’s clue about Buck might mean Steve’s death was a result of misplaced passion, which was definitely compelling. Hadley didn’t want to interrupt Paul for something insignificant, and although Barb had said it was big, people had very different definitions as to what big meant.
“I was going through his business emails, both his inbox and trash, looking for anything that looked suspicious,” Barbara began. “I came across an email correspondence between him and Clay Masters from last week that he’d tried to hide. Apparently, two weeks ago, Clay had requested for Steve to buy shares in a certain stock; I forgot the name,” Barbara waved her hand dismissively. “That’s not important. Steve never purchased the shares, said he forgot. Clay was furious, especially when the stock Clay wanted to buy skyrocketed a week later.”
“How much money are we talking?” Suze asked.
Barb blew out a long breath. “From looking at the figures, I’d say at least a million, presumably more if the stock continues to do so well.”
Hadley and Suze shared a knowing look. Everyone looked at money differently. To someone like Clay, even thousands of dollars might not be a big deal, but no matter who you were, millions of dollars was a heck of a motive.
“What happened in the time since?” Hadley asked, sure Clay Masters would’ve sued Steve after such an oversight.
Barbara shrugged. “Not much. I found an email of Steve apologizing, saying he’d been distracted working on a big lead, one that might allow for him to make up for the mistake. Clay seemed to forgive him. Other than that, there were just the emails from Natalie Masters.”
Remembering what Tianna overheard Natalie saying about Steve’s death, Hadley asked, “And what did those say?”
“They were mostly threats. She sent a few that were warnings that she was going to convince her husband to sue him and shut him down: put him out of business.” Barbara cringed as if recalling one of the harsher statements.
Suze pressed her lips together into a thin line.
“Clay doesn’t strike me as a man who easily forgives and forgets,” Hadley said, mirroring Suze’s feelings.
“So either Steve had something in the works that Clay felt was enough compensation for what he’d lost, or …” Suze trailed off then added, “Or he was faking his compliance until he got his revenge on Steve.”
“Or he forgave Steve but Natalie didn’t,” Hadley added, thinking about Natalie getting that kayak upriver. She rubbed the back of her neck at the notion.
