Chapter 16

STIRLING

Days pass. The team gather, investigate, disburse, the frustration growing between us as we struggle to find the evidence we need to capture Roman.

It took a day longer than Morrigan wanted, but Remy found a selection of properties Roman has purchased.

Which is why, long after midnight, Morrigan and I are on one edge of the city limits. Quinn and Scarlett are on the other side of the city and Remy is leading us from her apartment.

Stars spotlight the inky sky. The air is cold and still, the chill of winter nights to come pressing at the remaining warmth. It’s so quiet that every movement I make, every footstep crunches against gravel and twigs. All of them like gunshots ripping through the night.

I look Morrigan up and down, my jaw flexing because I’m not sure if I want to keep staring at her with her clothes on or tear them off with my teeth. Tonight, she’s wearing a black skintight catsuit. Her body all tits and tempting curves begging to be pinched and squeezed and adored.

“Stop looking at me like you’re about to maul me,” she says.

“What if that’s exactly what I’m about to do?”

“Do I get an orgasm out of it?”

I laugh and pop the earpiece Remy gave me into my ear. Static crackles as it connects. It’s an odd feeling, and it makes me shudder as her voice plays through.

“Yo?” Remy says in my ear.

Morrigan grimaces as the earpiece settles in her ear too.

“We’re in position,” Quinn’s voice comes over loud and clear.

“Scarlett?” Remy says.

“Hearing you loud and clear,” she replies.

“Morrigan?” Remy asks.

“I got you too.”

“Superb. We’re all set. You’ve got the property maps?” Remy says.

“Yes, we’re just outside the first property’s perimeter,” I say.

“Us too,” Scarlett says in my ear.

“Right. On three, enter the land. Approach with extreme caution. I knocked out the perimeter security remotely. After hacking some of the local security nets, I can’t see anything beyond what I’ve already taken out, but stay cautious. Get in, search, observe, and get the hell out again. Got it?”

“Got it,” the four of us say in unison.

Yesterday, Remy managed to hack into the property database—a crime worthy of the noose I might add. But she did it, clever bitch, and she managed to download all of the property transactions over the last six months.

We spent the night poring over the documents, trying to triangulate any purchases that seemed off. We narrowed it down to a collection of deals that were concluded faster than the rest, thanks to Trixie’s tips. We found sales that were all coin buys rather than through the banks.

The strange thing is, there were no names on the records. So although we’ve found the properties, the negotiation details have been scrubbed. Something that’s also illegal. We decided the next course of action was to get out to the properties and look for evidence.

So here we are out in the burbs, practically the sticks. There’s not another house for ages. Surrounded by fields and wooded areas, we’re miles from a shop or anything remotely looking like the New Imperium I know and love.
