Dorcas Dydion was waiting for Worf and his two companions in front of the Boreas Civic Center. The building was a long two-story structure made of a gray material that resembled slate. Worf studied the building, noting the tall, narrow windows and the short flight of stairs leading up to the main entrance, as he, Ganesa, and Yeoman Bodonchar walked toward Minister Dydion.
The Civic Center overlooked a gentle slope that ran down to Boreasâs harbor. The courtyard was made of tiles that seemed to form a pattern, and soon Worf saw that the images were of whitecaps and waves. The entire courtyard surface resembled the rough, blue-gray ocean in the distance; apparently the people here had their own attachment to the sea. Boreas itself, judging by what he could see from the courtyard, was a city of stark, simple buildings of wood and stone and wide streets lined by tall trees with green needles on their limbs. The treetops came to a point, like spears.
Worf inhaled the cold, clear salt-scented air. Boreas appealed to him more than any of the places he had seen on Epictetus III.
Minister Dydion wore a hooded brown coat and brown trousers. âGreetings,â she said as Bodonchar set down the small transceiver he was carrying. âTwo of my aides and three members of our security force are in one of the buildings nearby. I sent the others on to our evacuation site. The men inside think everyoneâs gone, but you have backup if you need it.â Worf found himself thinking a little more highly of the woman.
âThatâs all I can say,â Dydion continued. âI have to turn my communicator back on now. The men inside have insisted that a channel be open at all times, so be careful if you have to speak to your captain later.â She reached inside her coat and pressed a finger against a pendant hanging around her neck.
âWe await your instructions, Minister Dydion,â Worf said carefully, knowing that what happened in the next few hours was now up to Troi and Riker. It was going to be hard to wait. He would study the building, try to see how it might be breached without risk to the children.
âYouâll have to disarm yourselves. Iâll show you where to put your phasers.â Dydion turned toward the building and led them toward the stairway.
