Chapter 14
I was running a few minutes late, and as predicted, the Labor Day traffic in Amagansett, East Hampton, Wainscott, Sagaponack, and Bridgehampton was moving at a snailâs pace. No, a snail would move faster. On the drive, Iâd tried to puzzle out the pieces in Sashaâs murder but couldnât even come up with a corner piece. I had no attachment to any of the suspects like Elle did, making it easier to look at things objectively. Of them all, Kelsie was the one I was unable to picture as a killer. Based on experience, that should put her in the number-one slot as the murderess. Both she and Bethany had anger-management issues. Admittedly, Kelsieâs temper with Sasha Friday night was on the aggressive side. But to go as far as killing Sasha seemed inconceivable.
The closer I got to Sarabethâs on the Bayâthe bay being Mecox Bayâthe more anxious I became. Watermill was a small hamlet that was still considered part of the Hamptonsâmore like a Hamptons stepsister. Not an ugly stepsister like in Cinderella. My realtor buddy Barb had told me that Watermill was ranked one of the wealthiest areas in the United States. Every year, Elle and I would go to Watermill Museum for its yearly quilt show. I hadnât missed one since moving to Montauk. We would always make a day of it by visiting the Milk Pail Market and U-pick Farm, and our favorite stop, Mecox Bay Dairy for their selection of gourmet cheeses. I tended to be a cheese-aholic, preferring cheese and warm-from-the-oven bread with slabs of melting butter, over a sweet dessert, any day. The only dessert that trumped my love of bread, butter, and cheese was Patrickâs dark chocolate molten lava cake with its gooey center. Patrick always finished off the cake with fresh raspberries and a dusting of powdered sugar.
I passed Watermill Prime Meats and my thoughts naturally went to my upcoming dinner date. Was it a date? No. Though Iâd learned after googling Lee and viewing him in a myriad of A-list party photos that he was considered one of the Hamptonsâ top wealthy bachelors. In a few recent party pics, Sasha had been at his side. The pair made a stunning couple in the looks department, but what happened behind the scenes was something that I planned to find out tonight.
Once on Bay Avenue, I followed the road east until it snaked its way south. Up ahead I saw welcoming light spilling from the windows of a white shacklike structure perched next to a boardwalk overlooking the bay. The lot was full, and I had to wait for a tiny Miata to leave before I could park. After turning off the ignition, I pulled down the lighted visor mirror and said to my reflection, âMeg Barrett, you can do this.â My reflection didnât look so sure, reminding me that today was the first day in the past couple of weeks that I hadnât touched base with Patrick. I felt my confidence wane even more.
