Chapter 13

Ian came out and helped Angie clean off the windows. She told the kitchen staff to concern themselves with prep. She was trying to burn off her anger at Hallie by keeping busy and talking Ian’s ear off. “I can’t believe any adult would act in this type of childish way.”

Ian nodded and finished clearing off the last letter. “I think we’ll have to let it sit, and we can look at it tomorrow to see if we’ll need to repaint. Did you keep the paint codes so we can match it?”

“Yeah, they’re somewhere in the office.” Angie checked the time on her watch. “We need to get this stuff inside. I hope they arrest her so I don’t have to worry about this happening again tomorrow.”

“Angie, I don’t think they’ll keep her in jail for long on a vandalism charge. Even with the evidence, she’ll have to have a trial.” He picked up the rags and paint thinner can. He took the rag out of Angie’s hand. “I know you’re angry, but she won’t go to jail for years for this.”

“She should. And for slashing Sydney’s tires. They should add that charge in too. Actions like that prove she can’t take rejection as an adult.”

“At least you got her out of your kitchen. Who knows how much worse it might have been if you’d fired her a month from now?” He nodded to the door. “Let’s go inside, and you can get cleaned up. You should have changed before you came out here to help me clean this.”

“I didn’t want to get my work clothes smelling like chemicals.” She stepped back and took another look at the window. “It doesn’t look that bad, does it?”

“Most people won’t even notice.” He started toward the door.

Bleak and Hope walked around the building from the parking lot. “Hey, Matt has his music so loud they can’t hear us knocking. And the door’s locked. Whoa, what happened to the window?”

“Not noticeable, huh?” Angie shot Ian a death stare. “I fired Hallie today, and she was displeased, so she wrote me a letter.”

“Actually, three letters,” Ian corrected.

“Not funny, Ian.” Angie studied the window again. “We’ll get it repainted tomorrow, but hopefully tonight it won’t show as much in the dark.”

“Well—” Bleak started, but Hope grabbed her arm.

“Angie, I’m sure you’re right. In fact, I can hardly see it now. I bet no one will notice.” Hope pulled Bleak toward the restaurant door. “We need to get busy. Felicia said we’re fully booked tonight.”

As the girls disappeared into the restaurant, Angie dropped onto the bench they kept out on the sidewalk for overflow. “Everyone’s going to see it, aren’t they?”

“If they do, they’ll understand. It wasn’t your fault. Hallie did this, and she’s the only one to blame. If you hadn’t been here or if you’d waited until tomorrow, maybe she would have done something more than just spray-painting the window.” Ian pulled her to her feet, and they started toward the door. “You need to get showered and changed.
