Ben got off the elevator at the restaurant. The patrons still slept on their crossed arms. He probed a little at the itching twin-pitted sore on his back of his neck, wondering how it got there. His finger came away wet, but not bloody. He held his finger to his nose and breathed in the metallic cloying odor. So tired. I could sleep for days.

He found an empty booth and sprawled into it, relaxing his body in its enveloping cushion. He pushed his shoes off and let them drop to the floor. Almost involuntarily his head fell forward into his waiting crossed arms. All the muscles in his body relaxed. And just as he was drifting off, he was brought back to glaring wakefulness with a clap on his back.

“There you are, pardner! Where’d you get off to?”
