CHAPTER NINE

Green Hollow, Witch Hollow

SATAN

For an evil traveling carnival that wanted to capture my witch, her shifter, and me, trapping us forever, before sucking out our magic, The Lost and Found Carnival had brilliant taste in music.

I swayed my hips to the tinny, carnival version of Three Dog Night’s “The Show Must Go On” that rang out over Hollow Green.

Creepy.

Or was it creepily brilliant…?

Sin and my witch wove between the golden stalls that were decorated with sparkling stars, while constellations hung above them, as if entire realms were now suspended over Witch Hollow.

Dark Magic was suffocatingly thick in the air; it prodded against mine rudely like it was trying to work it out.

I trotted after my witch. I happily sniffed the delicious scents that were drifting from stalls selling candy floss, meaty burgers, and cheese, which overlaid the aroma of sawdust.

It wouldn’t hurt to have a wee bite of…?

Wait, hadn’t William said something about seductive?

Hell, seductive cheese.

Yum.

I purred, looking around at the food stalls, bright burlesque dancers, and booths that advertised in glowing lettering everything from palm reading to snake charmers.

How did you charm a snake?

Maybe you told them that green brought out their eyes. It always charmed me, when somebody told me that they liked my eyes.

Sadly, no kitty had yet told the Great Satan that. Unless you counted me saying it into the mirror every morning.

The usually neat village green was a chaotic mess. I’d bet that the Witch Inspectors were having heart attacks.

So, some good could come out of this.

The ducks were sitting around in a circle as a polite audience, watching a performance by a tall clown in a glittering golden costume with huge red shoes and nose.

I froze, shivering in shock.

What was more scary? The ducks massing or the clown?

Both together would haunt my nightmares forever.

“My witch,” I wailed, “I need you.”

Concerned, my witch turned to me and hunkered down. “What is it? Do you see my dad? The fox, Pest? Where are they?”

Damn, my whiskers, she sounded so hopeful.

It must be tearing her up inside to have heard that her dad had ended up in the carnival, after he’d been sent away on the Get Lost Carpet.

Had Tadeas been held in the carnival against his will? William had said that once the carnival took someone, you didn’t age but were held magically in a bubble: a perpetual slave to the carnival.

It sounded like a sort of urban legend come to life.

Be good or the Lost and Found Carnival will come and get you.

Or, you know, be good wee demon or we’ll give you to the carnival…

Demon parenting techniques were more on the traditional side like dragon ones.

If Tadeas was in here somewhere, then he’d be around the same age as my witch.

I, the Great Satan, would give every slice of cheese that I’d
