Thirty-Eight

Tyrell

IT WAS HARDER TO CATCH MICE THAN it was to release them.

“How many were there?” June asked Tyrell.

“Ten,” he said, scanning the now empty conference room, the aquarium open at his feet.

“Got one,” Jeremiah said immediately, cornering a tiny white mouse and trapping it under an overturned box.

“Wow,” Maybelle said. “You’re fast.”

There were only two ways for the mice to leave the conference room: through the door or through that little hole that led to the maintenance closet. While Jeremiah and Maybelle took the aquarium and went around to see if any of the mice had returned to the closet, June and Tyrell stayed in the conference room to see if they could catch any.

The door opened, and Marcus poked his head in. “You can’t be in here. There’s mice.”

“We know,” Tyrell said. “We’re trying to catch them.”

Marcus paused. “I don’t imagine you had anything to do with this?”

“Us?” Tyrell asked. “We’re just trying to help.”

Marcus narrowed his eyes. “Henry and Jordan already put traps out.”

“Maybelle doesn’t want them killed,” June told him. “Which is why we’re trying to catch them.”

“She wants to bring them to the park,” Tyrell added, “where they can live out their lives with joy and purpose.”

“These traps aren’t going to kill them,” Marcus said.

“Are you sure?” June said.

Marcus nodded. “I’ll give them to you once we’ve caught them all. You can free them in the park.”

They followed Marcus out of the conference room and bumped into Maybelle and Jeremiah, who had caught two more mice they had found huddled in the maintenance closet.

“Aren’t they so cute?” Maybelle squealed, holding up the aquarium.

Marcus shook his head. “You all are weird.”

“Marcus said the traps are humanitarian,” Tyrell told Maybelle. “He’ll give the rest of the mice to you when he catches them.”

“Can we take these to the park now?” Maybelle asked June.

“Sure,” she said.

“We’ll come with you,” Tyrell said. He put the aquarium into his bag and they headed to the lobby. “How was the meeting?” he asked Marcus, who trailed behind them. Marcus was probably making sure they actually took the mice outside.

“Fine,” he said.

“Did they say more about the housing program?” Tyrell asked as he opened the security door that led to the lobby.

But Marcus didn’t respond. Ms. G was at the front desk, admiring Stephanie’s new manicure. When she saw Tyrell, she smiled. Then Marcus appeared, and Stephanie immediately fluffed her hair.

“Hey, Marcus,” she said, sitting up straighter and smiling.

“Hey, Stephanie,” he said.

Tyrell glanced at Ms. G, but she was busy looking through the logbook.

“Hey, Ms. G,” Marcus said, walking over and casually leaning against the security desk next to her.

“Oh, hi,” Ms. G said. She was now neatening a stack of job-fair flyers.

A bell rang, and Stephanie checked the security camera and buzzed the person in. The door to the shelter opened, and in came Ms. Hunter from the birthday party three days ago.

“Iris!” Ms. G said, walking over to give her a hug. “What are you doing here?”

Tyrell followed Ms. G. “Hey, Ms.
